San Diego's Festive 5K - The Santa Run Returns in 2024!

Pacific Beach Christmas ParadeKids Playing in the Snow at the San Diego Santa Run

One of San Diego’s beloved traditions, and one of my family’s personal favorites, is returning in 2024 for its 12th year!

The annual Santa Run featuring uncountable numbers of runners dressed in Santa costumes is set for the morning of Saturday, December 14th, 2024. The event has a fun vibe, merry spirit, and iconic fashion that makes it one of my favorite holiday events in the area!

So, whether you’re planning on running, or just coming to root for the Santas, it’s definitely a uniquely San Diego holiday season event that you won’t want to miss!

Voted the “Best Fun Run” by USA TODAY

The annual Santa Run features thousands of spectators and runners dressed up in their crimson best. If you’re planning to be in the area during the one day event, I say walk or run to the Pacific Beach neighborhood in America’s Finest City to partake in this unique and festive event.

To me the Santa Run’s sea of red suits is a hilarious part of the holiday and since I live in Pacific Beach, one I can recommend from multiple years of attending the event.

And bragging rights where they’re due, the 5k event has been voted USA TODAY’s reader’s choice best fun run two years in a row!

  • Second Wave 5K: 10:00am
  • Kids 1 Mile: 11:30am

The Santa Run’s festive, and I would even dare to call it ‘jolly’, atmosphere makes this 5K a truly one of a kind experience.

All 5k participants get a Santa suit as part of their registration fee and it’s open to runners and walkers at all fitness levels. It’s equally perfect for serious runners looking for a challenge and families looking for a fun holiday themed outdoor activity.

Even better, the race concludes with the Pacific Beach Holiday Parade. This lively parade has floats, marching bands, and some of the best community groups, local businesses, and charities from the area.

Of course, nothing quite beats looking out into the crowd and seeing thousands of Santa Clauses for putting you into the holiday spirit.

And if you want to be part of the event, registration and volunteer opportunities are still open as of the writing of this article.

Course Details

Both the starting and finish line will be at 912 Garnet Ave, San Diego.

If you decide to participate, you’ll be looking at a 3.13 mile course with a 133 foot elevation gain. While there is no course cut-off time, walkers are encouraged to keep a 20 minute per mile pace. This way, the race can stay on schedule for the following waves.

Are Strollers Welcome?

Strollers are welcome in all waves. And for our creative and crafty readers, decorated strollers are encouraged!

The course map is available on the official Santa Run website.

Is There a Difference Between the 8:00am and 10:00am 5k?

Organizers created two wave times to accommodate both early-risers and snooze button aficionados.

That being said, only participants in the 8:00am wave are eligible for the Age Group Awards. Both waves will still be chip timed.

So, every participant in the 8:00am wave, 10:00am wave, and Kids Run will get their timed results!

Run PB Challenge

If you really love to run, or just like taking part in races, then I suggest that you join the Run PB Challenge.

The three races in the challenge are the San Diego Leprechaun Run, Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K and the San Diego Santa Run.

Everyone is welcome to partake in Santa Run in their best - or ugliest - Christmas attire!

Of course, if you don’t own a Santa suit, no problem! I really love the fact that if you don’t have your own Santa outfit like me, that’s OK because the big guy’s iconic red outfit is included in your 5k registration fee!

Holiday Fun for the Whole Family

A big reason I love the Santa Run is how inclusive the festivities are, and generally speaking, how welcoming the entire event is for everyone.

All levels of runners and walkers are invited and families are encouraged to participate. Both the human and furry, four-legged kind are welcome to attend and enjoy.

Post-Race Celebrations & Activities

Once you cross the finish line, the fun continues!

You can use your complimentary drink ticket at Mavericks Beach Club, Tavern on the Beach, or 710 Beach Club to celebrate post-run.

Be sure to have your ID with you in order to redeem your ticket.

The Pacific Beach Holiday Parade

The post-race drinks and party all lead up to the vibrant, colorful, and, in my humble opinion, super fun Holiday Parade!

With plenty of floats, music, and a very merry atmosphere, the Pacific Beach Parade is the perfect and memorable end to the day.

Looking for More Pacific Beach Fun?

Of course, there’s nothing I love to do more when I’m in Pacific Beach than to go surfing, or at least visit the beach!

There are plenty of surf schools around San Diego that focus on ability, number of people in your party, and time of day.

Pacific Beach and La Jolla are two of the top spots for surf lessons. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills, they can help you in the waves.

Try a La Jolla: 1.5-Hour Surfing Lesson

The La Jolla: 1.5-Hour Surfing Lesson is one of my favorite surf lessons in the area, and not that far from the Santa Run in my neighborhood of Pacific Beach.

Your experienced instructor will guide you through the technique and etiquette you need to feel confident on your board. The lesson is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers and no prior experience needed.

Supporting the Community through Holiday Traditions

The Santa Run isn’t just a race, it’s also the perfect opportunity to give back to the community while supporting local charities and organizations.

Benefiting the Pacific Beach Holiday Parade

Every year, the non-profit organization Discover Pacific Beach works with businesses in Pacific Beach to not only promote the community, businesses, and welcome visitors, but to ensure the continuation of the holiday parade for years to come.

Through year-round events, Discover Pacific Beach has helped to revitalize the community and the Santa Run is one of their premiere events.

So, How Does Santa Run Fund the Parade?

With costs quickly mounting to host the parade, including street closures, permits, portable bathrooms, and so much more, the holiday parade often deals with the threat of cancellation. In fact, organizers cancelled the parade a few times because of a lack of funds.

This is exactly where the Santa Run enters the story!

In 2013, the people behind the Santa Run decided to run the race on the same route as the parade to share, and one day completely cover, the parade’s expenses.

12 years and thousands of Santas later, the Santa Run has helped Discover Pacific Beach save money while also bringing hundreds of guests into the community to run, eat, and explore Pacific Beach.

Team Hoyt San Diego

The Santa Run also supports the non-profit organization, Team Hoyt San Diego.

Team Hoyt San Diego aims to build the “individual character, self-confidence, and self-esteem of America’s disabled young people through inclusion in all facets of daily life.”

From community activities, family life, and sports, Team Hoyt San Diego assists families in achieving their goals, including in races and triathlons.

Team Hoyt San Diego is inspired by the father and son duo, Dick and Rick Hoyt, who competed together in over 1,100 endurance events.

Embracing the Spirit of Giving and Togetherness

The holidays are always the perfect time to come together in the community to take part in seasonal activities and events. The Santa Run is a perfect example of an outdoor holiday celebration that welcomes everyone.

So, lace up your running shoes and join the San Diego Santa Run for a unique chance to support the local community and spread some holiday cheer.
