Turn Pacific Beach Green at the San Diego Leprechaun Run!

Running the Leprechaun RunErika and Friends at the Leprechaun Run

If you’re in search of a fun and family-friendly way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in San Diego in 2025, why not dress in green and join thousands of other runners in taking over the streets of Pacific Beach?

This year’s San Diego Leprechaun Run 5K will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, just a few days before St. Patrick’s Day on March 17.

As a longtime local to Pacific Beach myself, this is me and my wife’s year to go for the PB Run Challenge. We’re looking to run all 3 challenge races in 2025 - the Leprechaun Run for the first time, the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K which should be a nice test, and the fun and hilarious Santa Run.

What Is the Leprechaun Run?

The Leprechaun Run is a seasonal race held right in San Diego, but you don’t have to be a competitive runner to join - like a fun run, participants of all ages and fitness levels are invited to take part!

This annual event has been running in Pacific Beach since 2019 and I love that it’s a uniquely San Diegan way to celebrate the holiday. After all, Southern California’s year-round sunny weather means there’s little chance we’ll get snowed out!

As a PB resident myself, the race is practically in my backyard, and it’s really something to see a huge crowd of runners all dressed in green flooding the streets. In fact, it’s a lot like the long-standing Santa Run in December, but for St. Patty’s Day.

Start Times

There will be two races held in 2025, these being the 5K and the Kids 1 Mile. The start times are:

  • 5K: 9:00am
  • Kids 1 Mile: 10:30am

The starting line for both races is at 875 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109.

Registering for the Leprechaun Run and Course Information

Since the Leprechaun Run sees thousands of participants each year, we suggest registering in advance for 2025 and years to come. You’ll get some goodies with your registration, so the best way to ensure supplies don’t run out is to reserve your spot as early as possible.

Race Route

As mentioned above, the 5K kicks off at 875 Garnet Ave, San Diego. It continues up and down Cass St., then back along the length of Garnet Ave before looping back around. The finish line is right back where you started, so if you’ll have supporters in the crowd or you’re coming to support friends and family yourself, it will be easy to meet up after the race.

There is an aid and water station about 1.5 miles into the run.

How to Register

Race registration can be done in advance online, with sign ups via the event’s Race Roster page. Here’s a breakdown of pricing and what you get with your registration.

Push Yourself with the Run PB Challenge

It’s worth mentioning again that this year, my wife and I have gathered up a group of friends to take the Run PB Challenge. This is a series of three races held in Pacific Beach throughout the year, and the Leprechaun Run is the first on the 2025 challenge calendar.

The other two runs are the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K held in October and the San Diego Santa Run held in December.

By signing up for all three races, you’ll get some bonus swag, including a special themed finisher medal and a Run PB Challenge bib at each race.

All three of these races just so happen to make our list of the Best San Diego Half Marathons, Marathons in 2025, so if you like to run, want to run or just want to be part of some incredible fun throughout the year, check out that article!

Family-Friendly Things to Do in PB

If you’re in Pacific Beach for the Leprechaun Run, there are lots of fun things to do with kids. A beach day is always a fantastic option, with San Diego’s coastline still warm enough for a visit to North Pacific Beach in March. Plus, you’re only a short drive from SeaWorld San Diego a little to the south in Mission Bay Park, which is one of many kid-friendly attractions included with a Go City San Diego pass. Check out the low admission prices offered by the pass and use our discount code GVSD50FF for a little bonus savings.

If you’re looking for somewhere to refuel after the race with a tasty meal, our list of Fun Kid Friendly Restaurants in San Diego highlights a few options in the neighborhood.

As for family-friendly hotels nearby, we recommend the Pacific Terrace Hotel. It overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is only a half mile from the Leprechaun Run starting line, putting it well within walking distance if you want to skip the hassle of finding parking.

A Community-Focused Event

The Leprechaun Run is made possible through the support of local sponsors and volunteers, all coming together to put on a community event. As a Pacific Beach resident, it makes me proud to know that so many of my friends and neighbors are both taking part and also helping to run things behind the scenes.

Run for a Good Cause

The San Diego Leprechaun Run 5K benefits kids around the globe by collecting donations for Operation Smile, a charity focused on providing medical care for children with cleft palettes. So not only will you be taking part in a fun event, but you’ll also be supporting a worthy cause!

Spotlighting Irish Heritage

This St. Patrick’s Day themed run is all about the holiday, which means it’s also in connection with San Diego’s Irish community. Whether you have some Irish heritage yourself or just want to take part in this cultural celebration, the Leprechaun Run is a fun way to celebrate.

It joins a long tradition of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations happening in San Diego like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival in Balboa Park, which has been running for more than 40 years!
