Celebrate the Season with a Whoville Adventure in Balboa Park

California Tower As Seen from the Old GlobeKids Love How The Grinch Stole Christmas

My family has plenty of Christmas traditions, from picking out the best Christmas tree shortly after Thanksgiving at one of San Diego’s many Christmas tree lots, to going ice skating at Liberty Station, to of course the excitement of opening presents on Christmas Day itself.

And one newer tradition that we’ve recently made a part of our celebrations is attending the musical How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Shows are held at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park, which is also home to the San Diego Zoo, another of my family’s favorite attractions!

Dr. Seuss’s Holiday Classic Returns to San Diego for the 2024 Season

It’s hard for me to believe but this is the 27th annual performance of The Grinch in Balboa Park’s famous theater, rounding out the Old Globe’s yearly calendar.

Starring Andrew Polec in the leading role, the show has captivated San Diego audiences each year, and returns starting November 6th, 2024 this holiday season to get families in the Christmas spirit - mine included!

Embarking on a Whimsical Journey to Whoville

In performing their adaptation of the classic Christmas tale by Theodor S Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, The Old Globe Theatre pulls out all the stops to bring this story to life on the stage.

Transforming the Stage into a Snow-Covered Wonderland

Taking cues from The Old Globe Theatre’s artistic director Barry Edelstein, the set design of the play will have you convinced you’re really in snow-covered Whoville!

This joins colorful and fun costumes that will capture the imaginations of the kids (and kids at heart) in the audience.

Meet the Grinch and the Whos

The performance of The Grinch is written by Timothy Mason and directed by James Vásquez, based on the original production by Jack O’Brien.

Playing the Grinch for his fourth year is Andrew Polec, who recently performed in The Beautiful Lady at New York’s Greenwich Village. He’s joined by Tommy Martinez and David Michael Garry, who play young and old Max, respectively.

You’ll also get to meet Cindy Lou Who, played by Sofia Barredo, and a whole host of other actors and actresses populating Whoville.

Classic Songs That Warm the Heart

If you’ve seen the original 1966 animated classic, you’ll recognize many of the tunes in the stage play version. These timeless songs include “Fah Who Doraze” and “You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch.”

These join many new songs like “Santa for a day” which were developed especially for the live show by Timothy Mason, Mel Marvin, and Albert Hague, with choreography by John DeLuca.

Embracing the Holiday Spirit in Balboa Park

Whether you’re a local San Diegan or just visiting, spending the holidays in San Diego can be a magical experience!

Making Memories at the Old Globe Theatre

Attending the winter plays at the Old Globe Theatre is the perfect way to put yourself in the holiday mood, and my family goes every year! It’s one of the highlights of the season for us and for many San Diego families, as it’s been the standout winter performance for the last 25+ years.

We love it so much that it’s found spots on our articles for the best ways to celebrate Christmas in San Diego and our complete holiday guide, even getting an honorable mention as a great post-Thanksgiving activity. Honestly though, you can absolutely get a jump start on Christmas by attending one of the pre-Thanksgiving November performances as well.

It’s not just The Grinch either - other holiday favorites like A Christmas Carol have also found their way onto the stage. Last year my wife and I watched Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show at The Old Globe which we loved, too!

In 2024, the playhouse is running a different adaptation from Dec. 12th until the 22nd, A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story, which I’m sure will be just as entertaining.
