We promised to let you know when Xin Bao and Yun Chuan arrived at the San Diego Zoo!
After a 7,000 mile journey across the world, zoo officials confirmed their safe arrival in San Diego Friday morning.
Pandas, Rest, & Acclimation
While we can only imagine how the pandas are currently feeling, they’ll have plenty of time to rest and acclimate to their new home.
They won’t be available to the public for a few weeks yet. Allowing them plenty of time to settle in and bond with their care team.
The Long Journey to a New Home
The giant pandas left their home at the Wolong and Bifengxia Panda Bases as part of the conservation effort between the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.
A special team of experts, nutritionists, and vets traveled with the pandas and will remain with them until the pandas have adjusted to their new home.
Their arrival continues the legacy, collaboration, and conservation efforts that began in 1996 with Bai Yun, Yun Chuan’s grandmother, and Shi Shi.
A Farewell Celebration
In the spirit of unity, a farewell ceremony was held for the pandas ahead of their trip.
On Wednesday, dignitaries, care teams, conservation leaders, and Mayor Todd Gloria came together for the event.
With videos from both Chinese and American students, a gift exchange between the conservation teams, and cultural performances - the celebration was a highlight of the unique relationship between the two countries.
Following the celebration, the pandas began their journey where they were pampered on their flight with “carefully prepared fresh bamboo, bamboo shoots, fruit, vegetables, and specially made steamed buns.”
