Lions, Tigers and…Santa? Must be Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo!

There are lots of ways to celebrate the holidays in San Diego if you happen to be in town during the winter months (which are often just as mild and sunny as the rest of the year). Though you may not see snow, you’re sure to find plenty to do with your family, including special holiday events at some of the city’s biggest attractions.

Going to the San Diego Zoo is, in my opinion, the undisputed king of things to do while in San Diego, and this holds true during the holidays as well! Much like their fall festival HalGLOWeen, the zoo becomes a family-friendly wonderland for visitors of all ages during their wintertime festival known as Jungle Bells.

What Is Jungle Bells?

Jungle Bells is the San Diego Zoo’s annual holiday event set to be held from December 14th, 2024, to January 5th, 2025. It will feature themed decorations, live entertainment, and plenty of holiday cheer!

As a bonus for the 2024 holiday season, Santa touches down even earlier, with his factory opening its doors on November 29th.

And a bit more great news is that all special activities and shows are included at no additional cost with regular zoo admission, including memberships.

Making the Holidays Bright

In 2024, park guests can experience all-new Holiday Light Treks, which are walk-through light displays that really come alive in the evenings. And as a special holiday season bonus, exclusively during Jungle Bells, the San Diego Zoo will remain open until 8:00 pm!

Of course, you can also hop over to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido to check out their winter celebrations, too! These two premier San Diego attractions are often compared as the best things to do for wildlife lovers, and the Safari Park’s Wild Holidays has a nice selection of fun holiday events and activities as well.

But first, let’s check out the activities and experiences that are set to arrive this December at the San Diego Zoo’s Jungle Bell celebration!

Here’s what awaits families in 2024 that are looking to experience the magic of the season by celebrating at the San Diego Zoo.

Jingle Brass

One of the first things that gets me in the holiday spirit each year is when I hear a classic holiday sound like Frosty the Snowman or Jingle Bells. And I especially enjoy the songs when played with a brass band.

The Jingle Brass band takes Front Street Stage to play renditions of festive tunes. Their 25-minute shows run at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 6:30pm, and 7:30pm.

Reindeer Games

Sharing Front Street Stage with Jingle Brass are fun interactive Reindeer Games that invite kids to dance and play along. These begin on the hour at 5:00pm, 6:00pm, and 7:00pm.

Jack Frost Juggler

You can see Jack Frost’s juggling skills around Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. Shows will take place at 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, and 7:00pm, and last 30 minutes.

Holiday Troubadour

The Holiday Troubadour will make the rounds at Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, performing holiday classics on acoustic guitar at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, and 6:30pm.

Additional Highlights

The fun continues as you work your way through the San Diego Zoo park.

Kids can sit on Santa Claus’s lap and have their picture taken on select dates at Santa’s Factory in the Price Education Center of the Lost Forest. They’re also invited to listen to a wildlife-themed take on a classic story with Dr. Zoolittle's One Wild Night Before Christmas, which is at Stage Rocks Box in the Africa Rocks area.

Plus, there are plenty of fun activities that await at the Urban Jungle and Outback!

Toy Shop Hop

If you’ve ever wanted to see elves doing aerial acrobatic tricks, the Toy Shop Hop show offers a new look at Santa’s helpers when they perform at Sydney’s Grill in Urban Jungle.

15-minute shows will be held at 3:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm, and 6:00pm.

Dr. Harry & His Holiday Friends

You can meet the zoo’s mascots to wish them a Merry Christmas and snap some photos over by the Outback’s Boardwalk Beer Garden as well. Dr. Harry and friends will be there waiting to say hi to you and your kids this holiday season!

Meet and greet sessions last about 25 minutes and will be held twice daily, at 3:30pm and 4:30pm.

The Tinseltones

Alternating with Dr. Harry & His Holiday Friends, you’ll find The Tinseltones, who will be singing holiday songs as an a capella quartet. Join these carolers for fun renditions of the classics, plus a wintery surprise as “snow” falls in the San Diego Zoo during their finale!

20-minute performances will be held at 5:15pm, 5:45pm, 6:15pm, and 6:45pm.

December nights get a little bit brighter during Jungle Bells, as when the sun goes down, the zoo lights up!

Similar to the light displays over at the Safari Park’s Wild Holidays, these walk-through experiences cast the nighttime zoo in a whole new light, creating a magical backdrop for photos and timeless memories.

All holiday lights displays run continuously from 5:00pm until 8:00pm.

Holiday Light Celebration

It’s a colorful extravaganza on Front Street as you’ll get to tour the Holiday Light Celebration, where the trees and plants lining the pathways are cast in bright hues. This interactive display features presidents, animal-shaped lights, and a stunning atmosphere.

Holiday Light Symphony

You can also become the conductor of your own holiday orchestra at the Holiday Light Symphony, with lights strung up around the Cactus Garden just a few steps from the Upper Africa Rocks stage.

I really like this trail as it has a musical twist with its display synced up to the soundtrack!
