Getting Ready to Go into the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego ZooGreat Wineries at the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego Zoo

There are few ways to improve upon the already incredible world-famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, perhaps the best known of all San Diego attractions. But adding food, wine and beers to the mix is certainly a start!

The San Diego’s Zoo Annual Food, Wine & Brew Celebration invites guests into the zoo after hours for a truly unique experience. Alongside the wildlife residents and live music are incredible food and drink vendors that highlight some of the best restaurants, wineries, and breweries across Southern California.

When is the Food, Wine & Brew Event in 2025?

If you’ve been to the event last year, you’ll probably remember that it was held in the fall, or on September 21st, 2024 to be exact.

This year the event has been moved up to the spring time! The one night event is scheduled for May 23rd, 2025 starting at 6:30pm for VIP ticket holders and 7:30pm for general admission access.

My Thoughts About the Event

I attended last year with my wife, mom in her 80s and adult niece and her husband in their 20s. I won’t share my wife’s age here as she might get mad at me, but I think it’s fair to say that the event is great for people from their 20s to their 80s!

There is great food and drinks, all included as part of your admission, and all while at the zoo! What was really unique and magical is that the event is held at night, which is very rare for the zoo. 2024 was the first time I’d attended and this quickly has become one of my new favorite, yearly events in San Diego!

A Local Tip – What I Will Do Different in 2025

The one thing I will do differently in years to come is getting the VIP passes rather than the general admission tickets. Now these do cost a little more so if the general admission is where you feel comfortable, I’d say go for it! For us though, the 2024 experience felt a bit short!

With a VIP pass you not only will get extra time, you also get places to hang out and relax if you don't want to be walking around the entire time. VIP tickets grant access to three additional lounges, each with their own food and drink vendors, plus VIP-only bathrooms!

A Night for Conservation

While food and drinks are the highlight of the event, they’re not the only reason to come out and support the zoo.

You can also feel good about your purchase, as ticket sales benefit the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, the conservation organization behind both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido.

Tickets

VIP and General Admission tickets for the 2025 event are still available, but going fast.

Remember that this is a charity event and huge fundraiser for the zoo going to the conservation and preservation of the animals. So with your admission you’ll be supporting a very good cause!

Ticket prices per person for the Food, Wine & Brew 2025 are listed below.

  • General Admission: $179
  • VIP Experience: $299

It is worth noting that the ticket prices are ultimately considered a donation, so on the slight chance that the event is rained out, the prices paid are non-refundable and will go to support the zoo. Just know that the weather is usually mild and beautiful during May evenings so this is very unlikely.

What Awaits You at the Zoo

Characters Walking Around Outside the San Diego Zoo

A day at the San Diego Zoo always promises to be fun - so much so that it’s my personal favorite San Diego attraction!

I always recommend visiting, especially with the admission discounts provided by the Go City San Diego pass, which can also be used for other attractions like the SeaWorld San Diego and Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Use discount code GVSD5OFF for a bonus savings at checkout.

Of course, there’s even more to experience after dark at the Food Wine and Brew Celebration!

A Tasting Adventure

The diverse selection of vendors at the event will include locally-made beers, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages. You’ll get to sample drinks from an array of beverage companies, many of which are locally-based like Ballast Point Brewing Company and Bernardo Winery.

There will also be food vendors with an even more varied range of cuisines, with everything from appetizers and small bites to desserts sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. One thing’s for sure: you won’t go home hungry!

2025 Drink Vendors

The lineup of drink vendors was quite impressive in 2024 and it looks just as incredible for the 2025 event. With more than 75 vendors set to attend, you won’t be thirsty with wines, beers, non-acholic options like water and soft drinks and even kombucha on offer.

With so many choices from near and far, I especially love that so many are from the San Diego area. A few of the 2025 standouts for me are listed below.

  • Barlow Vineyards
  • Beach House Winery
  • Bivouac Ciderworks
  • Helix Brewing Co
  • Julian Hard Cider
  • Karl Strauss Brewing Company
  • Pizza Port Brewing Co
  • San Diego Brewing Company
  • San Diego Distillery

And for one more unique choice that I think is worth a try, check out a drink from Boochcraft Organic Hard Kombucha.

2025 Food Vendors

The list of food vendors is currently over 50 strong and the list could still grow before May 3rd!

The zoo advertises the event as featuring some of ‘Southern California’s best food’, and I can say from personal experience that they are telling the truth. There are so many tasty options that it becomes more about where to start and what to eat than finding something you like.

With so many companies joining the cause, a few of my favorites are listed below.

  • Del Frisco’s
  • Sevilla Restaurant and Tap House
  • Blue Poke
  • Beach Break La Jolla
  • Bluewater Grill
  • Mangia e Bevi
  • Hasta Man

And for dessert, I’d suggest you go with Gelato Love or Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt. Both are delicious and the perfect sweet treat to finish off the evening.

Wildlife Encounters

It’s safe to say that no visit to the zoo would be complete without seeing the animals!

While all attractions and exhibits aren’t open, guests will have access to areas like the Urban Jungle and Reptile Plaza.

There will also be shows and up-close animal experiences on the new Conservation Stage, alongside musical acts and other performing artists providing the night’s soundtrack.

Dress Code and Comfort

The event page recommends cocktail casual attire for the evening, so wear something formal but not quite black tie.

Also, since you’ll be walking a portion of the zoo grounds, comfortable shoes are a must! But if your feet get tired, there will be tables and chairs available, plus remember, lounge accessible for VIP guests.

Accessibility and Parking

The event is wheelchair accessible with only a few minor inclines within the party area.

If you’re driving to the San Diego Zoo, the main lot has free parking for the event. Otherwise, I suggest you take advantage of public transit options like the FRED Shuttle, taxis, and rideshares.

Can I Bring My Kids?

Unfortunately the answer to this is ‘no’. All attendees must be 21 or older.

Book a Hotel Nearby

Since the event ends late, attendees who don’t live nearby may be looking for a hotel. One of our favorites that isn’t far from Balboa Park is The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows, which is the perfect place to relax after the party.

The property recently went through a huge renovation so everything feels new and fresh. Plus the rooms and suites offer a retro vibe with reclaimed wood floors that I think you’ll really like.

History and Evolution

Fundraisers for the San Diego Zoo have taken many forms over the years, from NFL kicker Rolf Benirschke’s Kicks for Critters in the 1980s to the bombastic celebrations of today.

Food, Wine & Brew 2025 at the San Diego Zoo is yet another way the San Diego Zoo is supporting conservation efforts for rare and endangered species around the globe.

Supporting Wildlife

Donations and ticket sales from the event feed back into maintaining the zoo, keeping animals fed and housed, and ensuring we can continue to see these creatures in their natural habitats for generations to come.

Not only does this year’s event promise to be a thrilling evening, but it’s all for a good cause.
