Relax at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas
What’s Happening in Encinitas
The main attraction IN Encinitas is its beaches. They’re usually less crowded than more touristy neighborhoods, so you can get in some uninterrupted swimming or sunbathing.
Taking a stroll along the shore after dark at Moonlight State Beach is lovely, as is spending time at the fire pits. Other beaches are primarily surf spots, including Stone Steps Beach, Swami’s, and D Street Beach. There’s also Boneyards, but it’s a clothing-optional beach!
While Carlsbad is particularly great for families, the beaches of Encinitas can’t be beat. There’s nothing quite like having an oceanside bonfire after sunset at Moonlight State Beach or surfing at Swami’s - and the more local feel doesn’t hurt either!

Stay and Play in Carlsbad CA
Beaches in Carlsbad are known for having excellent surfing conditions, especially at spots like Tamarack Surf Beach and Warm Water Jetty Beach.
The sandy shores of South Carlsbad State Beach offer lots of space with an attached campground. Terramar Beach has tide pools that are great for kids during low tide.
Carlsbad’s beaches are larger than those in Encinitas. While this means you’ve got more space to stretch out or play in the waves, it also means bigger crowds.
Many of Carlsbad’s biggest attractions are geared toward families, like LEGOLAND California, which is part of the All-inclusive Go City San Diego pass. LEGOLAND California also has a water park and the SEA LIFE Aquarium.

Choosing a Favorite: Carlsbad
I know you might be surprised here as clearly I love what Encinitas has to offer at its beaches. But that’s why we built the comparison guide – to make the tough decisions!
Carlsbad’s attractions have more variety with lots of options for all ages, from the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch to LEGOLAND California. Unless you’re planning on spending your whole trip at the beach, I really think that Carlsbad has the better selection of activities.
