What to See in Coronado

Your visit begins via a quick drive across the iconic Coronado Bridge, a water taxi, or a 15-minute ride on a ferry.

We recommend hopping on the Coronado Ferry from either the Broadway Pier or the port at the San Diego Convention Center in order to take in views of the San Diego skyline and the historic Gaslamp Quarter.

From the ferry landing at Coronado terminal - it’s time to make your way to the following sights.

Places to Visit:

Must See Beaches

It’s easy to see why Coronado’s glittering sand and a picturesque seaside make the following beaches some of the country’s best.

Here are a few beaches we think you should take your family.

The beaches and bay area are really gorgeous here, especially for those who prioritize swimming and sunbathing. However, surfing enthusiasts should note that while there are some okay spots to ride the waves, there aren’t many truly excellent surfing beaches in Coronado.

Uniquely Coronado

Coronado Island offers 15+ miles of bike paths along the water. Plus amazing views of Downtown San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter.

Visitors looking to get in some shopping need only look toward the Ferry Landing Marketplace or downtown boutique offerings.

Don’t forget to grab lunch or dinner - Coronado Island is home to some of the best seafood in the country.

See More of San Diego

If your vacation has you staying on Coronado Island - there’s still plenty of time to discover other parts of San Diego.

Whether you want to visit Petco Park, visit SeaWorld San Diego, or you want to take in the views of the San Diego Bay, you’re only a few minutes away.

The ferry runs approximately every 15 minutes and the Coronado Bridge offers only a short drive into the city.

Where to Stay

In terms of Coronado Island hotels, the Hotel del Coronado is nothing short of iconic. If, like me, the Del has you thinking of jazz music and Shell Oil, it’s because the comedy classic Some Like it Hot which was filmed at the Hotel del Coronado!

The Victorian-style hotel combines luxury, classic hospitality, vintage style, and of course, plenty of sun and sand to create an unparalleled experience.

The Hotel del Coronado boasts first class charm and beachfront access to the Pacific Ocean - it’s everything you could ever want from an iconic institution.

A Look at La Jolla’s Attractions

Is there anything better than enjoying the classic warm, Southern California weather while hanging out on a beach?

Sporting over 14 beaches, La Jolla offers plenty of places to surf, kayak, or sunbathe. The area is perfect for visitors looking to bask in San Diego’s natural beauty.

Lovingly called La Jolla Village by the locals, this neighborhood may just be your family’s next favorite place.

Must See Beaches

With over a dozen beaches to choose from, it’s hard to create a list of our favorite La Jolla beaches.

These are a few area beaches we love and hope you will too.

Unlike Coronado, La Jolla is practically synonymous with surfing. Rent a board and enjoy the surf at its cove-like beaches that are famous in San Diego surfing culture, from Scripps to Windansea.

Other popular pastimes on La Jolla’s shores include snorkeling, scuba diving, and of course, swimming and sunbathing.

Uniquely La Jolla

La Jolla’s contrasting beauty lies in its flat sandy beaches, rocky reefs, and towering reefs.

Visitors looking to encounter more wildlife can visit the Birch Aquarium at Scripps to see over 380 species.

Afterward, choose from a variety of local restaurants that range from delicious authentic Mexican cuisine to excellent seafood.

See More in San Diego

If you’re staying in La Jolla during your visit to the area, you’re a short drive away from Downtown San Diego and the historic Gaslamp Quarter.

Plus, SeaWorld San Diego is just a quick trip away in Mission Bay Park. This family-friendly aquatic theme park has tons of thrills, shows, and animal encounters that everyone in your group will love.

Where to Stay

One of our favorite hotels in La Jolla Village, The Grande Colonial, is big on Southern California comfort.

Guests can experience the personal touch of a boutique hotel combined with a range of amenities that range from bikes to in-room spa services.

Fun fact! The Grande Colonial La Jolla is featured in our Best Hotels on the Beach list.

Which Neighborhood has the Better Attractions?

Though La Jolla may be a surfer’s haven, the iconic shores of Coronado make them my personal favorite between the two. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip!

La Jolla is one of the most popular family-friendly beach communities in San Diego for surfing, snorkeling, sunbathing, & exploring tide pools. Get acquainted with its unique atmosphere as Todd takes you on a tour of the beaches, shops, & more!

Tour Coronado Island

Immerse yourself in the sights of Coronado by joining a tour.

I also love the long bike path that extends along the Silver Strand. This 24-mile path known as the Bayshore Bikeway offers some incredible views of the bay.

Be Adventurous in La Jolla

Outdoor enthusiasts rejoice! Explore La Jolla in these thrilling activities.

  • Paraglide from Blacks Beach’s 300 foot-high cliffs
  • Snorkel in La Jolla Cove and keep an eye out for sea lions
  • Scuba dive to the canyon wall at La Jolla Shores

Many of La Jolla’s beaches border cliff faces or have rock reefs just offshore. Not only do these features give the beaches a dramatic and beautiful appearance, but they also improve surfing conditions.

Pros agree: La Jolla surf can’t be beat. This neighborhood has some of the best surfing beaches of anywhere in the country, including Windansea and Blacks Beach to name a few.

Rocky ocean floors also lend themselves to the formation of tide pools at the aptly-named La Jolla Tide Pools Beach and Casa Beach & Wipeout.

Finally, head to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve to see the namesake torrey pine and admire the view as you hike the trail overlooking the ocean.

The Ideal Neighborhood for Packed Itineraries

You won’t find yourself lacking things to do in either neighborhood, but the sheer variety of activities in La Jolla gives it the edge in this comparison.

Community Events

San Diego is a great spot to spend the holidays while immersing yourself in the culture and atmosphere of its diverse neighborhoods. Here are a selection of seasonal events in La Jolla and Coronado Island.

Celebrate in Coronado

Seasonal events shine a spotlight on the community and unique local atmosphere. Here are a few annual celebrations held in Coronado.

  • The Mother’s Day Historic Home Tour
  • The Coronado Flower Show - Every April
  • The Coronado Island Film Festival - Every October

Soak Up La Jolla’s Culture

Famous for its central role in San Diego surf culture, La Jolla also hosts its share of events and celebrations.

  • New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge
  • Luau & Legends of Surfing Invitational
  • La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival

Our Suggested Neighborhood

Attending seasonal events is a great way to get off the beaten path while on vacation. It’s a close call, but our team prefers Coronado Island’s events.

Ease of Getting Around in Both Neighborhoods

Let’s talk about how best to get around each neighborhood.

Old Town Trolley Tours in Coronado
Old Town Trolley Tours in Coronado

Navigating Coronado

Though Coronado may not actually be an island, it’s connected to the mainland by only a few points of access. As previously mentioned, these are either the Coronado Bridge or from the south via Imperial Beach.

Due to Coronado’s flat topography, wheelchair users can get around the island fairly easily.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, visitors can board a free Summer Shuttle that runs every 15 minutes.

Bike lanes are also available.

Both the 901 and 904 buses travel across Coronado.

However, why not travel like the locals - you can rent golf carts by the hour or day.

Getting Around La Jolla

Public transit makes it easy to get to the beach from anywhere in La Jolla, even without a car. Additionally, while some beaches are stair-only access, others are wheelchair-accessible. La Jolla Shores offers both Beach Access Mats and Manual Beach Chairs.

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) also offers ADA Paratransit with a 24 reservation.

Visitors can take the La Jolla-bound Bus (Route 30) or the MTS Trolley to downtown, The Village of La Jolla.

The More Accessible Neighborhood

Since Coronado Island is a bit harder to reach without a car, we’ll give the win to La Jolla here.

A Few More Things to Know Before You Visit

Every season brings unique delights to both La Jolla and Coronado Island. Here are a few things to know while you’re still making your decision about which neighborhood to visit.

Some Last Tips for Coronado

  • With miles of sandy beaches and historic homes, Coronado Island is perfect for groups who want sun and relaxation.
  • Though you can expect things to be more expensive in both neighborhoods, Coronado offers more budget-friendly activities.

Additional Info About La Jolla

  • Plenty of beaches, excellent surfing, and boutique shopping make La Jolla the place to be for groups who want excitement on their trip.
  • Most venues close early with minimal nightlife.
  • La Jolla can be a little pricier, but offers more unique experiences.

Choosing Our Favorite Neighborhood
