Snapdragon Stadium Delivers ‘BIG’ on Immersive Fan Experiences

First Mission in California Plaque Honoring Junipero SerraMap of Mission Trails Regional Park

When the 35,000 seat stadium opened in September 2022, the new design promised “an unparalleled landscape, spacious outdoor concourses, premium seating, and an immersive game day experience for fans.”

And I really think it totally delivers!

From rugby to foodie festivals to live music to football - there’s literally nothing Snapdragon Stadium can’t host and can’t host well.

It’s not just the home of Aztec Football. Snapdragon Stadium is also a year-round entertainment hub for the greater San Diego community.

The Spirit of a City

Built on the Qualcomm Stadium grounds, the current stadium may be smaller, but it offers guests something a bit different than the home of the Chargers never did - something uniquely Southern California.

As it was being designed, the singular vision for the stadium was simple: it has to embody San Diego.

What’s more iconic than the piers that are beloved by locals and tourists alike?

Thus the Sycuan Piers were born, alongside a mural of Baseball Hall of Famer and Aztec alumni, Tony Gwynn, and plenty of local food and drink options.

In 2020, SDSU bought the Qualcomm Stadium, which had fallen into disrepair following the departure of the Chargers in 2017 - and created instead a smaller stadium, with plenty of space for both events and socializing.

Qualcomm kept the naming rights and named the new stadium after their brand system. And so the uniquely named stadium was christened.

Snapdragon Amenities & More

Concessions, premium spaces and experiences, and sustainability. There’s plenty for everyone, and it’s looking green.

Concessions

San Diego cuisine is all about local, fresh produce and the Snapdragon concessions are all about local eats and drinks.

Each concession was chosen for its deep roots in the San Diego community and to represent one of the 30 unique neighborhoods in the city.

Premium Experiences

Guests have access to clubs, bars, and, of course, the Sycuan Piers.

Looking for something on the next level? In-house catering is also available!

Sustainability

Sustainability is a big part of Snapdragon’s current programs and cleaning policies.

Guests can find composting, landfill, and recycling bins in public spaces. Cleaning solutions are both environmentally friendly and housed in reusable containers.

Plus, systems are in place to reduce electrical use.

What Can You See At The Snapdragon Stadium

Now, the Snapdragon Stadium is home to the San Diego State Aztecs football team, San Diego Wave FC, San Diego Legion of Major League Rugby, and, beginning in 2025, San Diego FC.

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

San Diego Legion Rugby

Major League Rugby is thriving in San Diego. Established in 2017, the San Diego Legion has a dedicated fan base and their 2023 move into the Snapdragon has only opened the doors further.

Part family friendly game, part electric experience, the San Diego Legion is on a mission to break down barriers to the sport and inspire the community.

Tickets are available for the San Diego Legion season, May 19th - June 29th.

San Diego Wave FC

If Major League Rugby is thriving at the Snapdragon, then soccer is an absolute powerhouse.

Whether these all come down to the team’s ability to deliver a great game of soccer, some of the best players in the game, or the community-inspired spirit of rooting for the home team - Wave FC is tops.

Tickets are available for the Wave FC season, June 7th - November 3rd.

San Diego State Football

Hometown pride is alive and well - especially when the Aztecs hit the field.

After all, the Snapdragon is home to the Aztecs, and it’s all about Aztec pride. If the SDSU Mission Valley was built for San Diego, then the stadium was built for college football and Aztec fans.

The season begins on August 31st and runs until November 30th. Tickets are not yet on sale.

The stadium is a clear bag venue. I recommend limiting the number of items you carry with you into the stadium.

Place items in a clear bag that doesn’t exceed 12” x 6” x 12” or one-gallon plastic Ziplock bag.

Also, make sure purses or bags are not bigger than 4.5” x 6.5”.

Finding a place to stay while visiting the Snapdragon Stadium can feel daunting. Our team has put together a couple of our favorite hotels nearby that we think you should consider.

DoubleTree by Hilton San Diego-Mission Valley

If you’re traveling with family or in a mixed-aged group, we think of the DoubleTree by Hilton San Diego-Mission Valley.

The hotel is just a few minutes from the best dining in Mission Valley and popular San Diego attractions like SeaWorld San Diego, Old Town San Diego, and Balboa Park.

Featured amenities include both an indoor and outdoor pool, on-site restaurant, and, of course, that famous chocolate chip cookie. Recently renovated, this hotel is also pet friendly.

The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows

Traveling with friends or as a couple? Then we would suggest The Lafayette Hotel & Club.

Once the favorite getaway for classic Hollywood stars, Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Weissmuller, the Lafayette is now the boutique hotel that welcomes locals and tourists alike.

Recently renovated, The Lafayette’s decor is a marriage of luxury, period details, and functional art.
