Discover the Fine Art of Dance at the City Ballet of San Diego

Nutcracker BalletPolichinelles in the Nutcracker Ballet

When you think of San Diego, most people picture beaches before they think of ballet companies. But performing arts lovers know that San Diego ballet shouldn’t be missed, and I’m confident you’ll think so too after seeing a performance by the City Ballet in Downtown San Diego.

The City Ballet offers its patrons a one-of-a-kind experience. Inside this theater are performances of timeless, classic, modern, and contemporary ballets.

The City Ballet is a staple destination for locals and tourists, so plan a visit to the Balboa Theatre and enjoy a show from world-class choreographers and supremely talented dancers.

Where to See the City Ballet of San Diego: Then and Now

The City Ballet of San Diego has an incredible historic home and two additional theaters playing host for the coming years. Read on to find out more.

The Historic Spreckels Theatre

In previous years and for as long as I can remember, the City Ballet performances were given at the historic Spreckels Theatre, located in the Gaslamp Quarter at Broadway and 1st Avenue. The venue was built in 1915 by sugar magnate John D. Spreckels.

This baroque-style theater has been in almost continuous use since its opening. It has played host to legendary performers such as Judy Garland and Charlie Chaplin.

The entrance to the Spreckels Theatre greets you with a two-story Grand Lobby decorated with Predora onyx. Multicolored stained-glass windows, designed by experimental sculptor and artist Yaacov Agam in 1985, offer a bright prism of color. The color balances the white and black of the marble and onyx of the original architecture.

Once inside the 1,463-seat theater, you will marvel at the allegorical paintings by Emil Mazy over the stages’ ceiling. A giant mural depicting two angels sprinkling out a horn and the ancient sea god Neptune is bringing the Riches of the Ocean to San Diego.

The design places you both in the past and present simultaneously.

As of 2021, the Spreckels Theatre closed for renovations, and we don’t yet have a date for its reopening.

While we’re sure the renovations will be stunning once the theater is open again, for now, you can catch City Ballet performances at Balboa Theatre year-round and at California Center for the Arts, Escondido during holiday performances.

History of City Ballet

The City Ballet was formed in 1993. It is now under the guidance of former dancers turned creative directors and resident choreographers Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich.

Each season, the ballet offers its visitors four significant productions, including:

  • Balanchine works
  • Original pieces
  • Full-length ballets

They even produce a sensory-friendly performance of The Nutcracker in winter!

Family Ballet Saturday & Other Popular Events

Scene from the Nutcracker Ballet

If you’re hoping to introduce your kids to the world of ballet, Saturday is the best day to visit the Theatre. The City Ballet hosts “Family Ballet Saturday,” where they present the audience with ballet performances for all ages.

Some of the popular family ballet shows they perform are:

  • Adventures in Color
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • The Nutcracker

In the winter, the City Ballet’s annual performance of The Nutcracker is unforgettable. This timeless classic is the performance everyone thinks of when you mention the word ‘ballet.’ City Ballet’s version is an excellent way to celebrate the holidays in San Diego and a favorite Christmas time tradition for many families.

Classes and Camps

Spreckels Theatre provides dance classes! The classes range anywhere from children to adults, and even pre-professional courses are available as well.

Summer is another great time to visit. The ballet summer camps open and welcome kids ages four and up.

Tips to Make Your Ballet Trip a Memorable Experience

A Few Tips for Parking

Balboa Theatre is at 868 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. Parking is available at the 225 Broadway Garage lot, which is a short walk across the Horton Plaza. Pay for parking in advance when you purchase your ticket.

Alternatively, you can pay to park at Horton Parking Garage on the day of the event.

But why not keep things simple with public transit? The trolley will drop you at the Civic Center stop, about ¼ mile from the theater, or you can call a ride on the FRED shuttle from anywhere downtown.

When to Arrive

City Ballet would like you to arrive at least 45 minutes before the show. Arriving early will offer you plenty of time to find parking. You can also grab a snack and drink from the concession stand and find your seat.

Make it a Date Night!

Dining around the Theatre is second to none! Within walking distance, you can find burgers, tacos, Greek kabobs, BBQ, Thai, pizza, vegetarian and vegan restaurants, and so much more!

At the theater, food and beverages are available before and during intermission for all shows. The venue does require that all food and drink stay in the lobby. Outside food is not allowed in the theater.

Bonus Ideas: Make it a Full Day of Fun!

When I was considering all the food options to suggest near the theaters, I thought why not try it all on the Gaslamp Quarter Food & Drink Walking Tour? This is one of my favorite tours in town and could make a nice compliment to a performance at the ballet.

You could also pick up a Go City San Diego pass with our discount code GVSD5OFF to save on tours and other nearby attractions. Balboa Park isn’t far either and is full of more than a dozen museums, and of course the San Diego Zoo!
