Excitement Builds for the Padres 2025 Season

I can’t believe it’s finally here but my son was sure to remind me that as spring training in Peoria, Arizona comes to an end, the start of the San Diego Padres season is coming up fast!

While I’ll try and focus on Opening Day and game 1, there is an entire season ahead that me and my family are really excited to be a part of!

Opening Day Cheat Sheet

The San Diego Padres Opening Day is set for Thursday March 27th, 2025 against the Atlanta Braves with the first pitch at 1:10pm PDT.

You can watch on your phone on Padres TV and listen on KWFN 97.3 or XEMO 860.

The four game series continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

  • Thursday, March 27th , 2025 @ 1:10pm PDT (Opening Day)
  • Friday, March 28th, 2025 @ 6:40pm PDT (Party in the Park)
  • Saturday, March 29th, 2025 @ 4:15pm PDT (East Village Block Party)
  • Sunday, March 30th, 2025 @ 4:10pm PDT (KidsFest)

The Braves are a World Series contender despite their early exit from the playoffs in 2024. If they can stay healthy, stars like Ronald Acuña Jr. and Spencer Strider should allow them to challenge the Phillies and Mets in the NL East.

A Quick Look at the Season Ahead

The Padres have an exciting season set for 2025 as they make a push to get back to the playoffs and hopefully all the way to the World Series as they compete for the National League pennant and square off against the American League pennant winner in the World Series later this fall.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here and just hope that they pull off a victory on Opening Day!

In terms of the season, the Padres hope to build on the successes of 2024 but will still have to deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers who look to be the team to beat in the NL West division. After winning the second most games in team history at 93 games in 2024 but then losing to the Dodgers, the season ended with a thud.

Manager Mike Shildt knows that his top six hitters have all made the All-Star team, but it’s the bottom three hitters that could make the real difference for the offense. And Fernando Tatis Jr., one of my sons favorite players, is a real star that could compete for the National League MVP. With a little luck in the health department, I think he could really be a difference maker!

And in terms of pitching, losing superstar Juan Soto was huge but getting pitcher Michael King who finished seventh-place for the NL Cy Young last year in return was huge. He will be the Padres Opening Day starter!

Visiting PETCO Park

The 42,000+ seat home of the San Diego Padres is of course none other than PETCO Park.

Located in the East Village neighborhood of Downtown San Diego, the park was built in 2004. While it still feels new to me, the historical 1909 The Metal Supply Company building which serves as the left field foul pole is most notably from a bygone era.

Known as 'The World's Best Ballpark in America's Finest City,' I don’t think there is a bad seat in the house. And the views of the San Diego skyline beyond center field just add to the atmosphere for me and my family.

Ticket Information for the 2025 Padres MLB Season

So now that you know a little about the Padres Opening Day and the weekend series with the Braves, plus the fact that I love PETCO Park and will be in attendance at least a few times this year, let’s have a look at what it takes to get Opening Day, opening weekend and tickets to games throughout the 2025 MLB season ahead!

Ticket Information for Opening Day & Weekend

Opening Day tickets can be found on Stubhub.com and VividSeats.com but the official tickets through MLB.com can be had through Ticketmaster.com.

The first home series is a 4 game tilt with the Braves and beyond the first game, tickets are available to the other three games of this exciting series as well.

If I had to choose just one game, the pageantry and excitement of Opening Day would be my choice, but the Sunday afternoon game would be my second choice.

San Diego Padres Tickets

After the excitement of the first game is behind us, but the other 158 games of the season, with about half of those being home games still ahead, I know my son will be asking me when we can catch a few games throughout the season.

I love that the Padres offer so many ticket options so that whether you’re a local to San Diego like me interested in season tickets or perhaps just wanting to attend a single game, they have an option for you to consider.

Season tickets are currently sold out but you can join the Padres On-Deck Membership Waitlist to be informed when tickets become available. It’s $105 annual membership fee per seat to wait but it comes with exclusive benefits while waiting.

Single game tickets are available throughout the season and your best bet there is to check out MLB.com for availability. Prices vary depending on the Padres' opponents.

Regular admission Padres tickets include special pricing discounts for seniors, military personnel, and discounted group rates too!

The Best Seats in PETCO Park

As a local who has been taking my family to games for years, I think the best views are from seats in Sections 107-113, on the first base side, near the Padres dugout. Sections 108-112 behind the visitors' dugout on the third base line are also great too if you can get those.

Toyota Terrace seats on the second tier would be a great choice for Opening Day as they offer shade from the afternoon sun, even though San Diego’s weather this time of year is amazing!

For ultimate Padres fans with big budgets, the Field Box VIP tickets are unbeatable as well!

What to Expect on Opening Day

There’s something really special about being in attendance for a San Diego Padres Opening Day game. The organization always kicks up the festivities and with a usual full stadium, the energy is electric.

Opening Day Energy

While there will be events, giveaways, and multiple fan experiences throughout all four games of the opening series, what to expect for the Opening Day is excitement and anticipation.

Enjoy the Food & a Local Beer with Friends

OK, so while this may not be just an Opening Day only event, it’s what I am looking forward to the most and something I would suggest you check out if you’re lucky enough to be in attendance. I think these are really good tips for first time visitors to the stadium as well.

PETCO Park is known for having ‘very San Diego’ food and beverage options throughout the stadium with what I think must be at least 10-15 local beer vendors with three to four of their best beers on offer. They’re lined up for what feels like 100 yards. Grabbing a local beer just feels like baseball and it’s one of my favorite parts of going to a game.

For food options, I’m excited to try the Tijuana-Style Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dog available at the Elote/Michelada cart in Section 100, a new offering for 2025. The Pretzel Beer Cheese slider from Kona Big Wave Patio near section 227 is also on my list for Opening Weekend!

Opening Weekend Activities and Entertainment

It’s been my personal experience that the Padres do a really nice job of offering special events for families and themes for games and series throughout past seasons.

Opening Day and Opening Weekend 2025 will be no different with special events and giveaways throughout the four game series. Let’s have a look at what we can look forward to!

Party in the Park – Friday

Gallagher Square just beyond center field is the place to be on Fridays, starting with the opening series Friday game on March 28th. From the time the gates open until first pitch, fans can expect $5 drink specials, plus live music and activities that are fun for kids and adults alike.

Each week’s event is themed with pink and mint Padres colors being set for the opening series event.

Friar Funds are required for discounted drinks. Valued at $5, they can be used for food and drinks throughout the stadium as well.

Special to opening weekend, The first 40,000 fans to the Friday game will receive an opening series hat, courtesy of Sycuan Casino Resort.

The East Village Block Party – Saturday

The 13th annual Opening Weekend Block Party is set for Saturday, March 29th from 10:00am – 5:00pm. Live music, food and drink, vendors and more will line the streets on J St from 7th to 10th Avenue.

The event is family-friendly and free to attend. My kids are interested so this Saturday may be a good chance for us to see what it’s all about!

Kidsfest – Sunday

The Padres are always looking for ways to keep families excited and coming back for more and the Sunday Kidsfest is one of their best events. Set for Sundays starting Sunday March 30th, Kidsfest will feature bounce houses, the Paw Squad, face painting and more, all in the newly renovated Gallagher Square.

Kids Run the Bases – Sunday

At the conclusion of Sunday’s game, kids 14 and under are invited to run the bases!

Presented by Chick-fil-A, this is a fantastic feature of Sunday games throughout the season. Fans can start lining up after the eighth inning in Gallagher Square, with season ticket holders getting to skip the line.

After the game, your little guys can make a memory as they look into the stands from the field exactly as their major league heroes do on gameday!

PETCO Park – Beyond Baseball

PETCO Park is home to the Major League Baseball’s (MLB) San Diego Padres first and foremost, but the park also offers some pretty exciting tours, concerts and more during the 275+ days that are not home games for the Padres.

PETCO Park Tours

PETCO Park offers daily and pregame tours where a guide will take you around, from the seats to the dugout, field and even the press box, providing history of the venue and team alike.

I just found out that the tours are offered in Spanish and Japanese, so if you’d prefer a tour in one of those languages, the park has you covered!

The tour is a behind the scenes opportunity that usually lasts about 80 minutes. I can say that if you have teenage kids that are interested in baseball, stadiums, history or architecture, I think they would really enjoy this experience!

The tour is $39 but can be had a discount with a Go City San Diego pass using our savings code GVSD5OFF at checkout. The pass bundles admission to more than 50 of San Diego’s top attractions and gear rentals to offer lower than advertised prices.

In addition to the PETCO Park tour, I’d recommend the world-famous San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego and museums like the The New Children’s Museum in the Gaslamp Quarter and the San Diego Natural History Museum – theNAT in Balboa Park which are both great for families and all part of the pass.

Concerts and Events

PETCO Park offers concerts and events year-round in between baseball series of course. The largest crowd ever in the park was for a concert where nearly 80,000 fans were in attendance!

This year you can expect a range of musicians from Papa Roach & Rise Against: Rise of the Roach Tour the evening before the Padres Opening game on March 26th at 6:00pm to a country music favorite, Brad Paisley set for a show on Saturday, June 7th at 7:30pm.

Parking Information

There are 30,000 parking spaces within 20 minutes' walking distance to the park. Parking generally costs between $10 and $35 per game with the closer you are the more you’ll pay. If you can book in advance, you may be able to take advantage of discounted rates.

Parking at the Convention Center is smart with spaces costing $10-$15. You could also have a meal in Little Italy or stroll Balboa Park and then walk over.

It’s good to know that if you get lucky, parking near PETCO Park is free after 6 pm.

My #1 Tip for Getting to Petco Park

My top tip for getting to PETCO Park and the way I arrive every time to avoid having to deal with traffic and pay for parking is to take the San Diego Trolley.

Using San Diego’s public transportation may seem scary to some, but I can tell you as a longtime resident of San Diego that the ride couldn’t be easier or more convenient. The trolley allows you to park away from the park and be dropped walking distance away, all for a small fee and minimal hassle.

Tips for Opening Day, the Season & More

If you’re in for going to the game on Opening Day, opening weekend or looking at attending any of the 80+ games throughout the season, then the tips and information below will be helpful to know before you arrive!

Stay Near PETCO Park

Located in the East Village neighborhood of the Downtown San Diego area, your options for quality hotels near the field are very good!

We did a full article on the best places to stay in Downtown San Diego and another on the best places to stay near the Convention Center. Since PETCO Park is adjacent to the Convention Center and in Downtown San Diego, any of those hotels on those lists would be well located and a great choice!

But if I had to narrow down the lists here my top two choices would be the Pendry San Diego and the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego.

Stay at the 5-Star Pendry San Diego

The Pendry San Diego is one of only a few 5-star hotels in the whole of San Diego County.

Officially found in the Gaslamp Quarter and just a few blocks from PETCO Park, the boutique hotel offers unmatched luxury with a fancy lobby, six bars and restaurant options, my favorite being a ground floor stylish bar and restaurant with big screen TVs, plus modern clean rooms and a rooftop pool.

Stay at the Lively Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

My other choice would be the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego.

Also located an easy walking distance to PETCO Park, the rock ‘n’ roll-themed hotel is an experience every time I get to stay. The hotel has a rooftop pool with a fun bar, plus stylish rooms and a bit of a pregame party atmosphere.

Large Crowds are Expected

When there is a special event, like Opening Day or the Padres are playing a team with a large fan base like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers or San Francisco Giants, you can expect more fans, long lines and the need for more patience!

Arrive Early

I often give this as one of tips for San Diego’s most popular events but with attending Opening Day or any Padres’ game during the season, it’s really about more than just missing the first pitch.

Visiting PETCO Park is an experience by itself and having time to walk around, stop in a store, grab a hotdog or local beer and still be in your seat for the National anthem just adds to the experience for me and my kids.

We also love to arrive extra early, with the park usually opening 90 minutes before the start of the game. When we arrive early, we have a chance to see batting practice, warm-ups and now and then can even get an autograph or two from one of the Padres best players.

Note that Gallagher Square opens 2.5 hours before games, so you can have the opportunity to enjoy the 2.8 acres of open space, and the kid’s play areas before you take your seats as well.

All of this happens before the first pitch and you won’t want to miss it!
