Ring in New Year’s 2025 in San Diego

Delicious Gin Drinks at Capitans Quarters in Pacific BeachRelax at North Pacific Beach

The New Year is a time for reflection and a chance to think about both the past and the future. It’s also a reason to celebrate all that lies ahead. I surely love a good party to welcome in the year ahead.

Luckily, there’s no shortage of celebrations and bashes taking place all over San Diego during New Year’s Eve 2025, and even a few on New Year’s Day too.

From Festivals to Bay Cruises

If you’re looking to party this New Year’s, San Diego has you covered with local concerts, bar crawls, themed parties, and more.

There are even a few events that offer a more scaled-back approach to New Year’s celebrations, like cruising around the bay, one of my personal favorite ways to close out the year in style.

Also don’t forget about all the ways to make the first day of 2025 feel truly special that are unique to San Diego!

And if you want to keep the party going all year long, check out A Complete Guide to All the Holidays in San Diego for more suggestions covering each holiday season.

Local Tips

1) Ring in the New Year at Captain's Quarters

Neighborhood: Pacific Beach
Address:
910 Grand Ave Ste 105-107, San Diego, CA 92109
Date: Dec 31st, 2024

You can spend New Year’s Eve in the Captain’s Quarters, a themed bar and restaurant that depicts a literal captain’s quarters of 17th-century ships.

This is right in my neighborhood, Pacific Beach. The food is great, but the drinks are the star, with creative takes on rum, mezcal, bourbon, tequila, and vodka cocktails crafted by expert bartenders. The theming goes all-out, even including port holes on the walls that are synced up to show videos of the ocean so you’ll really feel like you’re on a ship.

New Year’s Eve celebrations at Captain’s Quarters include both live music and a DJ, and the bar is open late to keep the party going until well after midnight.

Why We Love It

The cocktails here are exceptional, especially if you like gin, which is the spirit of choice here to tie in with the fun pirate theming. The drink menu is huge, too, with the Captain’s Call specialties being some of my favorites.

Where to Stay

Relax in a bay view hot tub or attend a sunset luau at the Polynesian-themed Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, located conveniently within walking distance of Captain’s Quarters.

2) Big Night San Diego at Hilton Bayfront

Hotel: Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Address:
1 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101
Date: Dec 31st, 2024 / 9pm
Cost: Tickets starting at $98

If a lively party filled with music, dancing, and huge crowds of revelers is your dream New Year’s Eve celebration, you can’t go wrong with Big Night San Diego. Held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, this massive party has an ecstatic energy that I can’t help but love.

Ticket options include Main Event tickets for the 11:00pm countdown, all-inclusive tickets with entry at 9:00pm, VIP list tickets, and Velvet Rope tickets which come with numerous premium upgrades. All tickets offer access to an open bar, including a champagne toast at midnight, while VIP and up tickets also include top-shelf drinks and an hors d’oeuvres buffet.

Why We Love It

This is the biggest party in San Diego on New Year’s Eve every year!

It’s a 21-and-up event with a young vibe - so while I’m not exactly the target demographic anymore, I know just how popular Big Night is with the college crowd.

Where to Stay

The most convenient option here is to simply stay at the same venue and book a room at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Just make sure to book well in advance, as this beautiful bayview hotel fills up with other partygoers.

Date & Time: Dec 31st, 2024 - 3:00pm - 5:30pm
Cost: $154.85 per person

If you’re seeking something a little more low-key compared to the huge parties, but you still want to get out and try something new, I suggest that you book your ticket on a New Year’s Eve Dinner Cruise.

Featuring a holiday buffet, live music, and views of the bay, this cruise is an elegant option for celebrating the end of the year.

Don’t forget my favorite - views of the sunset over the bay - which gets top marks on our Complete Guide to All the Holidays in San Diego.

Why We Love It

This is one of the better family-friendly options for New Year’s Eve, with a more laid-back atmosphere and free passage for kids under 3 years old, plus earlier hours for those who won’t quite make it to midnight.

Where to Stay

Among the hotels near the cruise port, the InterContinental San Diego is one of my favorites thanks to its luxurious feel and, of course, those unbeatable views of the bay or skyline.

4) CRSSD Proper New Year’s Eve / New Year’s Day at PETCO Park

Date: Dec 31st, 2024 & Jan 1st, 2025
4:00pm - 12:30am on Dec 31st & 3:00pm – 10:00pm on Jan 1st
Cost: $175 for one day; $295 to $315 for both days

EDM fans flock to FNGRS CRSSD’s Proper concert each year to ring in the new year with incredible tunes and an even better atmosphere. Featuring four stages and more than 50 music acts including live music, this 21+ event spans two days, beginning from the afternoon of New Year’s Eve all the way to midnight and starting up again on New Year’s Day.

This year’s CRSSD Proper NYE event will be held at PETCO Park in the Gaslamp Quarter, which will look pretty different compared to when I go there to catch a Padres game!

Why We Love It

If you’re into house, techno, or EDM, there are few better ways to experience it than dancing in a crowd counting down to the ball drop, so Proper NYE is the place to be.

Where to Stay

At about a 5-minute walk from PETCO Park, the Pendry San Diego is both conveniently close and well worth staying at in its own right, with an elegant boutique feel.

As a bonus idea, I would recommend that you treat yourself to a massage at Spa Pendry to start 2025 stress-free!

5) Glitz & Glam New Year’s Eve Party at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

Hotel: Hard Rock Hotel San Diego
Address:
207 Fifth Avenue San Diego, CA 92101
Date & Time: Dec 31st, 2024 - Starts at 9:00pm
Cost: $54.49

San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is known for its VIP nightlife, and you can party like a true celeb at the Glitz & Glam New Year’s Eve Party held on the rooftop at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, right next to the pool deck.

The location alone will have you feeling like you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve in an exclusive club, while the shimmering decorations and thumping DJ music mimic Times Square in New York City.

You’re also invited to explore ballrooms themed around different genres of music, from house to reggaeton.

Why We Love It

The rooftop pool at the Hard Rock Hotel is always a great spot to get an amazing view of Downtown San Diego’s city skyline at night. The New Year’s Eve party elevates it to all new levels, and we love the exciting atmosphere.

Where to Stay

Staying at the Hard Rock Hotel after the party is an easy recommendation to make. Not only is it convenient, but you’ll also get to feel like a rockstar, especially if you go all-out and book a VIP suite.

6) Crawl 'Til The Ball Falls: San Diego NYE Bar Crawl 2025

San Diego Tours: 10 Best San Diego Food & Beer Tours
Address:
TBD
Date: Dec 31st, 2024
Time: 6:00pm to 2:00am

Bar crawls are a time-honored tradition. With dozens of breweries, pubs, clubs, bars, and other spots to get a drink, the nightlife scene of the city is an unbeatable location for the Crawl 'Til The Ball Falls: San Diego NYE Bar Crawl 2025.

You can explore some of San Diego’s hottest venues as you travel between different bars, sampling specialty and themed drinks at each one. Tour tickets include all cover charges and other fees, so you can simply enjoy the party and mingle with your fellow attendees.

The tour starts in a secret location somewhere in San Diego, with different venues picked each year, making for an exciting surprise!

Why We Love It

If visiting one bar simply isn’t enough, getting to sample multiple different places and party all around the city is an amazing way to get a feel for the local bar and club scene, whether you’re a local or you’re a vacationer looking to experience as much as possible during your stay.

Where to Stay

Since the exact venues involved in this crawl are kept secret, we’re not totally sure where you’ll end the night.

But as far as Downtown hotels go, the Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown, Curio Collection By Hilton is a great pick - and a dip in the heated saltwater pool here is the perfect way to start the new year off right.

7) Celebrate New Year’s Eve with Dinner & Drinks at Fort Oak in Mission Hills

Neighborhood: Mission Hills
Address:
1011 Fort Stockton Dr, San Diego, CA 92103
Date: Dec 31st, 2024
Time: Dinner reservations starting at 5pm

If you’re looking for New Year’s events outside of parties, I think that going out for dinner and drinks is always a great option. You’ve got your pick in San Diego, but one of my favorite restaurants that’s open late is Fort Oak.

This is a modern, upscale restaurant that really elevates a night out. Stars of the menu include half-shell oysters and the heritage pork chop.

Eat here with the family or grab a few friends to kick off the evening. Either way, you’ll see why this restaurant deserves a spot on our Complete Guide to All the Holidays in San Diego with your first bite (or sip!).

Why We Love It

I’ve eaten at this restaurant a few times outside of the holidays and I’ve been impressed every time. It’s also in a great neighborhood, with a lot of boutique shopping in the area while you wait for your reservation.

Where to Stay

After a long night out, the last thing you want is a long trip home. That’s why I’ve picked out great hotels nearby each party on the list.

Here, I’m recommending the Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town. Fort Oak is in the heart of Mission Hills and just up the hill from Old Town. You’ll also get to stay next to scenic attractions in Old Town like Presidio Park and historic ones like the Whaley House Museum.

8) Bonus New Year’s Day Activity #1 - Go to Balboa Park & Check Out One of the Many Museums

San Diego Attractions: Go City San Diego Pass
Date: Jan 1st, 2024
Time: Generally 10:00am to 5:00pm

It’s not just NYE: there are plenty of holiday celebrations on New Year’s Day, too! One suggestion we like to share is heading to Balboa Park on January 1st to visit a museum or two.

Balboa Park has museums that appeal to just about everyone. Our favorite picks for families are the San Diego Natural History Museum, also known as theNAT, and the Fleet Science Center for kids with an interest in STEM.

If you’re a fan of superheroes, plan a trip to the Comic Con Museum. Exhibits at the San Diego Museum of Us are an excellent way to learn about history and anthropology, while The San Diego Museum of Art is filled with breathtaking works from various art movements.

If you’re planning on visiting multiple museums, you’ll want to get a Go City San Diego pass using our discount code GVSD5OFF for additional savings on admission to San Diego’s best museums and attractions!

Why We Love It

This is a great way to include the whole family in your New Year’s celebrations. I’ve named a few of my personal favorites, but there are over a dozen different museums in Balboa Park to choose from, so have a look for yourself and pick your favorites!

Where to Stay

The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows has hosted plenty of celebrities over the years. Now’s your chance to add your own name to the list - and don’t skip taking a dip in the massive pool.

9) Bonus New Year’s Day Activity #2 - Spend the First Day of the Year at the Beach in Sunny San Diego

San Diego Tours: 5 Best San Diego Surf Lessons & Rentals
Date: Jan 1st, 2025
Time: All Day

After a night of partying, what could possibly be better than spending New Year’s Day by the seaside?

There are few places where it’s warm enough on January 1st for a beach trip, so I love this uniquely San Diegan way to commemorate the changing of the year. Plus, you may not know that January actually has the most sunshine hours of the whole year in Southern California.

You’ll have your choice of beaches to visit, too. We suggest walking along the pier at Pacific Beach, sunbathing on the shores of Coronado Central Beach on Coronado Island, or even going surfing at Stone Steps Beach in Encinitas.

Why We Love It

Few people can say they spent the first day of the year next to the ocean, so hitting any of San Diego’s beaches is a surefire way to make lasting memories this holiday season.

Where to Stay

Your choice of hotel might vary depending on which beach you plan to visit. If you want to stay near the ocean in Pacific Beach, Tower 23 is one of my favorites, and it’s right off the Crystal Pier.

Before you go, we’ve got some tips for how to celebrate New Year’s Eve in San Diego, including answers to some common questions.

How Early Should You Start Planning?

For most New Year’s Eve parties, the rule of thumb is the earlier, the better. Some events have tickets that increase in price as the event approaches while other events will sell out far before the event date, so buy them as soon as you’re certain you want to attend.

How Can You Get Around the City, Safely!?

After a night of celebrating and possibly drinking, the last thing anyone wants to worry about is transportation!

Luckily, you won’t need a designated driver if you take advantage of San Diego’s excellent public transport options. These include rideshare services and cabs, buses, the Coaster, the FRED shuttle Downtown, and the San Diego Trolley.
