Best New Years Eve Parties in San Diego 2025

You can spend New Year’s Eve in the Captain’s Quarters, a themed bar and restaurant that depicts a literal captain’s quarters of 17th-century ships.

This is right in my neighborhood, Pacific Beach. The food is great, but the drinks are the star, with creative takes on rum, mezcal, bourbon, tequila, and vodka cocktails crafted by expert bartenders. The theming goes all-out, even including port holes on the walls that are synced up to show videos of the ocean so you’ll really feel like you’re on a ship.

New Year’s Eve celebrations at Captain’s Quarters include both live music and a DJ, and the bar is open late to keep the party going until well after midnight.

Why We Love It

The cocktails here are exceptional, especially if you like gin, which is the spirit of choice here to tie in with the fun pirate theming. The drink menu is huge, too, with the Captain’s Call specialties being some of my favorites.

Where to Stay

Relax in a bay view hot tub or attend a sunset luau at the Polynesian-themed Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, located conveniently within walking distance of Captain’s Quarters.

If a lively party filled with music, dancing, and huge crowds of revelers is your dream New Year’s Eve celebration, you can’t go wrong with Big Night San Diego. Held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, this massive party has an ecstatic energy that I can’t help but love.

Ticket options include Main Event tickets for the 11:00pm countdown, all-inclusive tickets with entry at 9:00pm, VIP list tickets, and Velvet Rope tickets which come with numerous premium upgrades. All tickets offer access to an open bar, including a champagne toast at midnight, while VIP and up tickets also include top-shelf drinks and an hors d’oeuvres buffet.

This is the biggest party in San Diego on New Year’s Eve every year!

It’s a 21-and-up event with a young vibe - so while I’m not exactly the target demographic anymore, I know just how popular Big Night is with the college crowd.

Where to Stay

The most convenient option here is to simply stay at the same venue and book a room at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Just make sure to book well in advance, as this beautiful bayview hotel fills up with other partygoers.

If you’re seeking something a little more low-key compared to the huge parties, but you still want to get out and try something new, I suggest that you book your ticket on a New Year’s Eve Dinner Cruise.

Featuring a holiday buffet, live music, and views of the bay, this cruise is an elegant option for celebrating the end of the year.

Why We Love It

This is one of the better family-friendly options for New Year’s Eve, with a more laid-back atmosphere and free passage for kids under 3 years old, plus earlier hours for those who won’t quite make it to midnight.

Where to Stay

Among the hotels near the cruise port, the InterContinental San Diego is one of my favorites thanks to its luxurious feel and, of course, those unbeatable views of the bay or skyline.

EDM fans flock to FNGRS CRSSD’s Proper concert each year to ring in the new year with incredible tunes and an even better atmosphere. Featuring four stages and more than 50 music acts including live music, this 21+ event spans two days, beginning from the afternoon of New Year’s Eve all the way to midnight and starting up again on New Year’s Day.

This year’s CRSSD Proper NYE event will be held at PETCO Park in the Gaslamp Quarter, which will look pretty different compared to when I go there to catch a Padres game!

Why We Love It

If you’re into house, techno, or EDM, there are few better ways to experience it than dancing in a crowd counting down to the ball drop, so Proper NYE is the place to be.

Where to Stay

At about a 5-minute walk from PETCO Park, the Pendry San Diego is both conveniently close and well worth staying at in its own right, with an elegant boutique feel.

As a bonus idea, I would recommend that you treat yourself to a massage at Spa Pendry to start 2025 stress-free!

San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is known for its VIP nightlife, and you can party like a true celeb at the Glitz & Glam New Year’s Eve Party held on the rooftop at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, right next to the pool deck.

The location alone will have you feeling like you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve in an exclusive club, while the shimmering decorations and thumping DJ music mimic Times Square in New York City.

You’re also invited to explore ballrooms themed around different genres of music, from house to reggaeton.

The rooftop pool at the Hard Rock Hotel is always a great spot to get an amazing view of Downtown San Diego’s city skyline at night. The New Year’s Eve party elevates it to all new levels, and we love the exciting atmosphere.

Staying at the Hard Rock Hotel after the party is an easy recommendation to make. Not only is it convenient, but you’ll also get to feel like a rockstar, especially if you go all-out and book a VIP suite.

Since the exact venues involved in this crawl are kept secret, we’re not totally sure where you’ll end the night.

But as far as Downtown hotels go, the Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown, Curio Collection By Hilton is a great pick - and a dip in the heated saltwater pool here is the perfect way to start the new year off right.

If you’re looking for New Year’s events outside of parties, I think that going out for dinner and drinks is always a great option. You’ve got your pick in San Diego, but one of my favorite restaurants that’s open late is Fort Oak.

This is a modern, upscale restaurant that really elevates a night out. Stars of the menu include half-shell oysters and the heritage pork chop.

I’ve eaten at this restaurant a few times outside of the holidays and I’ve been impressed every time. It’s also in a great neighborhood, with a lot of boutique shopping in the area while you wait for your reservation.

Where to Stay

After a long night out, the last thing you want is a long trip home. That’s why I’ve picked out great hotels nearby each party on the list.

Here, I’m recommending the Best Western Plus Hacienda Hotel Old Town. Fort Oak is in the heart of Mission Hills and just up the hill from Old Town. You’ll also get to stay next to scenic attractions in Old Town like Presidio Park and historic ones like the Whaley House Museum.

It’s not just NYE: there are plenty of holiday celebrations on New Year’s Day, too! One suggestion we like to share is heading to Balboa Park on January 1st to visit a museum or two.

Balboa Park has museums that appeal to just about everyone. Our favorite picks for families are the San Diego Natural History Museum, also known as theNAT, and the Fleet Science Center for kids with an interest in STEM.

If you’re a fan of superheroes, plan a trip to the Comic Con Museum. Exhibits at the San Diego Museum of Us are an excellent way to learn about history and anthropology, while The San Diego Museum of Art is filled with breathtaking works from various art movements.

After a night of partying, what could possibly be better than spending New Year’s Day by the seaside?

There are few places where it’s warm enough on January 1st for a beach trip, so I love this uniquely San Diegan way to commemorate the changing of the year. Plus, you may not know that January actually has the most sunshine hours of the whole year in Southern California.

You’ll have your choice of beaches to visit, too. We suggest walking along the pier at Pacific Beach, sunbathing on the shores of Coronado Central Beach on Coronado Island, or even going surfing at Stone Steps Beach in Encinitas.

Why We Love It

Few people can say they spent the first day of the year next to the ocean, so hitting any of San Diego’s beaches is a surefire way to make lasting memories this holiday season.
