Take to the Skies!

Hot Air Ballon Just About to LandSolo Hot Air Balloon in the Sky

Taking a hot air balloon ride over San Diego is an exciting and breathtaking way to get a unique perspective of the area from the air!

Soaring high above, you’ll see views of the city, coastline, and mountains that you just can’t experience in any other way.

I hesitate to use such a strong word as ‘epic’, but I personally think the thrill of a hot air balloon ride as the sun crests the hills in the early morning or as it sets over the Pacific Ocean at dusk is a world-class experience.

I ask you to imagine floating over the city with your family or loved one and just how that would feel.

You’ll certainly gain a new appreciation for the city’s beauty and make a memory that could be the highlight of your trip. I can assure you that you won’t soon forget such an experience!

How Long Do Hot Air Balloon Rides Last?

Hot air balloon rides usually last several hours to give you a full aerial tour of the San Diego area. During the ride, your pilot and other members of the flight team will be available to answer questions you have while keeping you safe and comfortable.

San Diego balloon rides usually depart at sunrise or sunset for the best possible views of the surrounding landscapes.

Sunrise or Sunset?

That was a perfect transition into a common question I get asked which is, ‘Should you take a sunrise or sunset balloon ride?’

My simple answer is, ‘It depends.’

Both tours offer beautiful views, so the best one for you will depend on your preferences.

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Rides

Sunrise hot air balloon rides start early!

At dawn you can expect dew in the fields and pinks and oranges in the sky as the sun peeks over the mountains to the east. But with such an early start, you’ll probably want to grab a hotel for the night before the ride.

I’ll give you a more detailed hotel suggestion with each hot air balloon tour I cover below, but as a shortcut, opt for the Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas if you choose to sail from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Stay at the Omni La Costa if a coastline ride from Del Mar is your speed.

And I suggest The Fin Boutique Hotel which provides easy access to the Oceanside beaches, a swanky boutique design and a straight shot into Temecula for the hot air balloon options there!

Sunset Hot Air Balloon Rides

If you’re not an early riser like me, perhaps a sunset hot air balloon ride might be the best choice for you.

I personally love watching the hot air balloons sail over the Pacific Ocean coastline in Del Mar in the evening, and that’s just from the ground!

With a sunset hot air balloon ride and the blue skies and low humidity you’re bound to get with most days in San Diego, you just might experience one of the most incredible sunsets you have ever seen!

Are Hot Air Balloon Rides Worth It?

In my opinion, the answer is, ‘Absolutely’!

You can expect spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, a breathtaking and serene experience as you travel along the beautiful coastline plus unmatched views of the city. And you’ll get to experience all of that while surrounded by the pink, gold, and orange hues of sunset or sunrise.

Many companies offer private tours as well, if you’re looking for a more romantic setting, so if you’d like a ride for just you, your loved one and a pilot or the flight team, be sure to ask!

Fun fact! We even featured hot air balloon rides in our Unique Things to Do in San Diego article!

Ready to Make New Friends?
If you’re taking a group ride, prepare to make friends while on your trip. Hot air balloons are quite small, so you will likely end up in close proximity to other guests.

The Best Time of the Year to Go Hot Air Ballooning

The weather in America’s finest city, San Diego, is consistently incredible no matter when you visit the area and thus, you can take a hot air balloon ride on most days of the year.

However, there are some seasons that are going to provide a better experience than others.

Summer & Fall

Late summer and fall are generally the best times to take hot air balloon rides in San Diego.

Summer’s long warm and sunny days and fall’s comfortable weather are really the ideal time to go.

After all, the warm weather with minimal precipitation and calm winds are the perfect conditions for flying.

As a bonus, prices during the fall are often cheaper than earlier in the summer, as kids are back at school and there aren’t as many tourists visiting.

Winter & Spring

The coldest and rainiest times of year in San Diego are usually January and February, so these are typically not going to be the best for hot air balloon rides.

Flights are limited during the months because of the lower demand. However, since there are fewer tourists during this time, you may be in for a more relaxed, peaceful experience.

May and June are often the cloudiest months with May Gray and June Gloom, so you may not get the best visibility for your hot air balloon ride.

However, spring is a great time to see the colorful wildflowers as they blossom from above. And with mild temperatures and generally comfortable conditions, it could just become your favorite time to balloon.

Looking at Del Mar from South to North

The Del Mar Coastline

Many hot air balloon tours take place north of Downtown San Diego near Del Mar.

The dramatic hilly landscapes, ocean views, and preserved open spaces in this area make it a great place to launch hot air balloon tours.

Why I Love Hot Air Balloon Rides from Del Mar

You can expect to see a good bit of Del Mar from your hot air balloon and will have dramatic views up and down the Pacific Ocean coastline.

Throughout the tour, you’ll also see some of the San Diego area’s most stunning beaches, luxurious San Diego golf courses, and the rugged nature preserves.

The hot air balloon team will also point out key landmarks to check out along the way.

Temecula Valley

If you’re interested in visiting wine country, then these are the balloon rides for you!

You’ll get amazing views of vineyards and wineries nestled in the rolling hills, olive groves, and horse ranches.

Why I Love Hot Air Balloon Rides from the Temecula Valley

The winning combination of scenic charm and the wine country atmosphere make these rides perfect for special celebrations, like bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthdays, and romantic getaways for couples.

I also think these rides pair perfectly with a visit to a local winery or wine tasting in the area.

Tips For Amazing Hot Air Balloon Rides in San Diego

Two Hot Air Ballons Over San Diego
Two Hot Air Ballons Over San Diego

Taking a hot air balloon ride is an incredible experience, but it’s important to be prepared before you go.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your San Diego aerial adventure!

Dress Accordingly

Temperatures can fluctuate in the air, so it’s always helpful to bring a lightweight jacket that you can take on and off.

Wear a hat or some other type of head cover to protect your hair and keep it in place.

Finally, be sure to bring sunglasses, as the sun can be dazzling when you’re up in the air.

Be Flexible

Your hot air balloon ride will need the right weather in order to launch.

While San Diego has consistently good weather, it is still possible to get rained out if there is inclement weather.

Being flexible with your tour dates can help if you end up needing to reschedule.

Booking a Tour

The easiest way to book is directly through your hot air balloon provider.

Be sure to share your preferences and ask questions ahead of time so you make the most of this once in a lifetime experience.

Keep Your Belongings Safe

All valuables should stay securely attached to your body to ensure that they don’t fly away.

Crossbody bags or fanny packs are great ways to ensure that all of your essentials stay secure.

If you’re bringing a camera, consider using a neck strap to keep it in place.

Plan Transportation Ahead of Time

When booking your flight, you’ll want to consider how you’ll get to the Del Mar area or Temecula areas.

Driving, ridesharing apps, and public transportation are all options.

Just be sure to plan your time accordingly.

Prepare To Make Friends

Hot air balloons are quite small, so you will probably end up in close proximity to other tour members.

Luckily, these tours have a very social atmosphere, so it’s quite easy to get to know your fellow passengers.

Safety Comes First

Be sure to listen to your pilot and other crew members.

Their instructions are for your safety and can also help you feel more comfortable up in the air.

You should also be sure to check your provider’s safety regulations before you book.
