Exploring the Exquisite Westgate Hotel San Diego

Bronze Statue at the Westgate HotelLarge Rooftop Swimming Pool at the Westgate Hotel

Did you know that you could be treated like French royalty while right in the heart of San Diego? It may sound like a fairy tale, but The Westgate Hotel in Core-Columbia can actually make this dream come true!

With 223 rooms in a nineteen-floor building, The Westgate Hotel, not to be confused with the Westgate Las Vegas Resort, offers its guests a unique kind of hotel experience. Located on the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, the property caters to guests with high standards and refined tastes.

Old World Comfort & Charm

The setting may look formal, but the professional staff is most concerned with your comfort while you’re a guest of the hotel.

The rooms and suites reflect the same old-world charm found in the lobby, with plush bedding, imported European furniture, elegant carpeting, and floor-to-ceiling windows with a stunning view of the city. Each spacious room also has a private marble bathroom and balcony, adding to your sense of peace and relaxation.

Dine Like Royalty

If dining quality and options matter to you when selecting a place to stay, The Westgate Hotel may be the perfect choice!

Fine dining can be enjoyed at The Westgate Room, the opulent on-site restaurant that features French cuisine with Southern California freshness, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.

Have a drink before your meal or a nightcap before retiring at the Plaza Bar, which features live entertainment and craft cocktails. Of course, you may prefer to stay in and order room service which is available 24 hours a day.

The hotel is also a popular spot for weekend brunch and high tea in the afternoons, served in the Grand Lobby. During the holidays The Westgate Hotel has the very popular Santa Story Time Tea.

We love this annual event so much that we featured it in our Holiday Season Guide to San Diego Christmas Activities.

Favorites of Our Site’s Founder

If you’re looking for the best of the best when comparing hotels in San Diego, you’ve come to the right place!

I’ve chosen some of my favorite aspects from my stay at The Westgate Hotel so you know what sets this elegant hotel apart from the competitors.

It’s Designed After the Palace of Versailles in France

When you enter the lobby, you may forget that you are in Downtown San Diego, thinking instead you have been transported to a boutique inn somewhere in France.

The common areas are anything but common, with gilded baroque furniture, marble flooring, and a grand piano placed next to a dramatic staircase. The Westgate Hotel was actually designed after the Palace of Versailles in France, and this inspiration is flawlessly captured in the sense of opulence that I felt everywhere from the lobby to the rooms.

A Lovely Spot for Afternoon Tea

Though it gives off an aura of class and glamor, The Westgate Hotel still embodies that unmistakable sense of warm San Diego friendliness that makes me love this city.

While you can observe this all over the hotel, one of my favorite touches is the hotel’s traditional European afternoon tea, a practice that perfectly blends an elegant tradition with a laid-back vibe that makes it perfectly San Diegan.

Hotel guests can drop by the Grand Lobby to indulge in afternoon tea from Wednesday to Sunday. In addition to an extensive selection of beverages, the menu also includes three courses with starter salads, scones and cream, and Petit-Four desserts.

There’s So Much to Do Nearby

You don’t have to worry about being out in the middle of nowhere when you stay at The Westgate Hotel.

In fact, you’re right in the middle of some of the best neighborhoods in San Diego’s Downtown, as the hotel is seated just outside the Gaslamp Quarter. Full of nightlife, bars, shopping and culture, this is the perfect option for guests looking for fun.

You also won’t be far from the bayside Embarcadero or great arts venues like the San Diego Civic Theatre.

Other nearby attractions include the San Diego Convention Center and the San Diego International Airport (SAN) isn’t far away either, making the hotel a popular choice for those flying into the city for a convention.

Swim Above the Skyline

If you’ve seen our article on the best hotels in San Diego, it’s no secret that I love a rooftop pool, and the one at The Westgate Hotel really is something special!

This amazing outdoor pool is the perfect place to relax between activities, and you can’t argue with the view. It’s incredible to catch panoramic views of the San Diego skyline, all without getting out of the pool!

You can also dine poolside whether you visit in the morning or the evening, so even if hotel breakfast usually isn’t your thing, I’d make an exception for this unique twist!

Pack Your Trip Schedule With Things to Do

I previously mentioned the premier location of the hotel in Downtown San Diego. But what about amenities and things to do onsite?

Let’s dig a little deeper into onsite offerings as well as some of my favorite things to do in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Set Out for Fun and Exploration

Let’s have a look at some of the attractions that are nearby.

Visit San Diego’s Major Attractions

San Diego is packed with things to do, many of which aren’t far from Core-Columbia and the Westgate Hotel.

Take a little time to see the San Diego Zoo, LEGOLAND California or SeaWorld San Diego. You can also easily catch a Padres game at PETCO Park or in the off season, checkout the PETCO Park tour, one of my personal favorites for families.

As for museums, take your pick! Learn more about the city’s military history at USS Midway Museum, or tour some of the more than a dozen Balboa Park museums and stroll through the quaint gardens.

Many of these attractions are part of the Explorer or All-inclusive versions of the Go City San Diego pass, an excellent option for those who want to see and do it all during their stay in San Diego. Save even more on admission when you use our discount code GVSD5OFF at checkout.

Make Time for a Beach Day

Head to the Pacific Ocean at Mission Beach or Pacific Beach to sunbathe, swim, surf, or paddle board. You can also go kayaking through the sea caves in La Jolla Cove.

Another benefit of the Go City San Diego pass is getting discounts on beach gear rentals. If you’re planning to surf, kayak, or paddleboard, pre-purchasing a pass will help you save.

Tour the Great Outdoors

San Diego's sunny weather and mild temperatures mean you'll want to maximize time spent outside.

Rent a bike and ride through the city and along Coronado Island on the Silver Strand, or hike the trails of Torrey Pines Natural Reserve or at Cabrillo National Monument. You can even visit Torrey Pines Golf Course to hit the links or visit one of the area’s other premium golf courses.

Want to spend more time on the water? Book a fishing excursion or a whale-watching tour that leaves from San Diego Bay or one of the nearby marinas.

Why not get to know the city while you’re staying at The Westgate Hotel?

The hotel’s location puts it nearby plenty of interesting areas, from the shopping malls of Fashion Valley Mall, Hillcrest, and Seaport Village to the historic neighborhoods of Little Italy, Old Town San Diego, and La Jolla.

I also recommend taking the Gaslamp Quarter Food & Drink Walking Tour, which is one of the most fun ways to see the city for foodies and history enthusiasts alike!
