What to Expect When Staying at The Pearl Hotel

The Quaint Swimming Pool at the Pearl HotelTables to Relax at next to the Pool at the Pearl Hotel

Staying in San Diego while on a budget doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfy guest rooms or quality amenities. I’ve stayed in plenty of hotels that were on the cheaper end but still provided value, and one of my most highly-recommended is The Pearl Hotel.

Located in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego is a boutique hotel that captures the magic of mid-century modern style and glamour. Though it shares a name, don’t confuse this hotel with the ones in Panama City Beach or New York City - what you get here is entirely original!

The Pearl Hotel was built in the 1960s, and what was once known as The Sportsman’s Lodge is now hailed as a trendsetting spot for dining, weddings, and fabulous accommodations.

Of course, with the preservation came renovation. Take advantage of those modern amenities and updates, including an electric car charging station, while you are a guest.

What Makes The Pearl So Memorable

The Pearl has a ‘vibe’, and you’ll feel it from the moment you check in and are greeted by the friendly front desk staff.

The 23 rooms and suites at this non-smoking hotel are the perfect balance of form and function, with a serene color palette, wood furnishings, and original artwork that only adds to the sense of comfort and tranquility guests feel when they stay.

Slip into a complimentary bathrobe and relax in your room or lounge by the inviting oyster-shaped pool. I think it’s that laid back Southern California feel that comes over me each time I stay here that I really can’t forget.

Dining Here Is a Must

In the evenings, The Pearl shines, thanks to its on-site restaurant Charles + Dinorah. Named for the original owners of the Sportsman’s Lodge, this restaurant serves dinner, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients with a seasonal menu.

Poolside seating is also available when the weather is too enjoyable to sit inside. Be sure to check the event schedule to see what’s playing on the big wall for Dive-In Theater, a unique movie night offered poolside.

A Well-Loved Venue

With its distinctive design, this hotel makes for a magical setting as a wedding venue. Work with the event planning staff to organize your ceremony and reception or book the whole hotel for your guests and wedding party.

The Pearl can also host corporate retreats and business functions. With its commitment to customer service and exceptional atmosphere, it’s no wonder why The Pearl Hotel has earned a name for itself in the area and landed on our list of the best budget-friendly hotels in San Diego.

Our Favorite Things About The Pearl Hotel

Travel guides alone don’t do The Pearl Hotel justice; you’ve got to stay there to get what makes it special. Here are a few things I really appreciated from a recent guest’s perspective.

Quaint Presentation

Picture a converted apartment building. Then drop a pool down right in the center, and you’ve got The Pearl!

While it might not scream “beach getaway” like some other seaside San Diego hotels, I think the layout is really charming and feels authentic. The hotel’s cute design even makes it popular with couples as an affordable romantic getaway.

Due to the way the hotel is built, some rooms are pool view, while others face outward toward Point Loma. Many are decorated with ocean-themed artwork that calls back to the hotel’s namesake, which was inspired by Japanese pearl divers.

The outdoor pool tucked at the hotel’s core is the centerpiece that elevates it to delightfully kitsch, and enjoying the Early Risers breakfast spread poolside is really unique - though you can also have breakfast delivered as room service if you prefer.

A Top-Quality Restaurant

The first thing you’ll hear when talking to locals about The Pearl is almost certainly praise for Charles + Dinorah. It’s part-restaurant and part-cocktail bar, located poolside. I think the restaurant is one of the best in the area, and locals like myself love dining there even when they’re not staying at the hotel.

In addition to the longstanding Charles + Dinorah, The Pearl also opened a newer restaurant, Ponyboy, which brings the concept of “locavore” dining to a new level. It’s all seasonal and the hotel works closely with San Diegan farmers and fishers to provide dishes with only the freshest ingredients.

I personally think in time that Ponyboy will become just as popular as Charles + Dinorah.

Central to Point Loma

With its prime location in Point Loma, The Pearl puts you close to many of the activities and attractions you may want to explore during your stay. Not far from you are historic and natural sites, the playground that is Shelter Island, and of course, you have all of San Diego to experience at your leisure.

I don’t have a single bad word to say about The Pearl Hotel’s great location. It might not be smack in the center of Downtown San Diego, but there’s so many things to do in Point Loma that it’s just as fun, especially if you’re into military history or you’re looking to go hiking.

Hotel Amenities and Activities

The Pearl Hotel might not have the kinds of extensive amenities you’d expect at a resort, but it still provides worthwhile services and amenities.

Check Out Dive-In Theater Nights

You’ve heard of a drive-in theater, but what about a dive-in?

On select evenings at The Pearl, you can watch a movie projected over the pool, either sitting at the poolside lounge or while going for a swim! This is a weekly event held after 8:00 pm and typically intended for adults based on the movie the hotel is screening.

All hotel guests are invited to attend and hop in the pool at no additional charge. Even non-guests can get in on the fun with a drink purchase!

Note that Dive-In showings were paused during the onset of the pandemic, but a return is planned soon, and The Pearl Hotel is hoping to announce new event dates in the near future.

Be Part of an Artist Showcase

Hit the bar and lounge to check out a new artist every week! The Pearl is constantly spotlighting local artists in many different mediums, from performances and music to paintings and sculptures.

The artist showcases help keep the decor at the hotel fresh while also drawing attention to some truly talented individuals, which is a win-win for hotel guests and the community.

Downtown, Point Loma & Much More!

Make The Pearl your headquarters as you sight-see around San Diego Bay, the downtown area, and other districts during your stay. Here are just some of the amazing activities I suggest you try.

Explore the Outdoors

Point Loma is a big hiking destination with lots of different options.

Take a short walk to Shelter Island, where you can go sailing or charter a fishing excursion from the marina. Or hike to Cabrillo National Monument, making time to explore the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and the tidal pools while you’re there.

Of course, you can’t miss the best view of the Pacific Ocean from Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, one of our top places to see the sunset in San Diego - though the sunrise is just as stunning from the summit!

You’re not limited to Point Loma attractions either. Rent a bike to explore the waterfront or ride along the Silver Strand on nearby Coronado Island. Mountain bike or hike through Torrey Pines Natural Reserve, or even schedule a whale-watching tour or harbor cruise around San Diego Bay.
