Exploring a 5-Star La Jolla Resort: The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Lots of Lobby Seating at the Lodge at Torrey PinesPool, Sun and Fun, the Perfect Combination

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is an amazing snapshot of the best hotel experience San Diego has to offer: high-end luxury, impeccable service, nature all around, and views of the picturesque Pacific Ocean.

Next to the US Grant, The Pendry, The Fairmont Grand Del Mar and The Park Hyatt Aviara, the Lodge at Torrey Pines is in elite company as one of just a handful of true 5-star hotels in all of San Diego.

Local Tips
La Jolla Attractions
Guests can enjoy the best of La Jolla attractions when visiting The Lodge at Torrey Pines. With close proximity to major golf courses, the Del Mar race track and La Jolla Playhouse, guests have the opportunity to fully embrace all the region has to offer.

This rustic yet luxurious resort boasts unparalleled views of the rocky La Jolla coastline as well as the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course. Add a top-rated spa, fine dining and superior service and you've got the full Lodge experience!

A Touch of Nature - Inside and Out

Inspired by the bordering Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve, the resort looks to bring the natural beauty from outside into the lobby, rooms and common areas.

The property is adorned with dark woods and neutral earth tones throughout that keep nature in mind. Guests will appreciate the panoramic views from their luxury rooms and suites, many of which feature balconies and patios.

Speaking of the ‘views’, I can say from first-hand experience that the grounds are expertly kept! When I think of The Lodge at Torrey Pines, the Torrey Pines Golf Course instantly comes to mind! I’m talking about perfectly manicured greens, narrow fairways and cleverly placed sand pits meeting blue skies, full San Diego sun and the postcard perfect Pacific Ocean.

If I can even paint an even deeper image for you, the fresh cool morning air, a hint of dew, smell and sound of the ocean in the distance combined with a crisp but not cold ocean breeze is a unique luxurious experience that I personally really enjoyed!

Dining and Other Amenities

The amenities are first class, including a local car service, dry cleaning, nightly turndown service and daily morning coffee. The large heated outdoor pool features underwater music and a hot tub in a serene setting.

There are two dining options on-site. Fine dining restaurant AR Valentien serves farm-to-table dishes, with the option to dine on the terrace alongside views of the golf course and the coastline. For a more casual experience, The Grill at Torrey Pines offers a range of eats in addition to craft beers.

Accessibility-Friendly Property

The Lodge offers various accessibility options for guests in both the Signature Rooms and the Palisades Rooms. Options include roll-in shows, accessible tubs and grab rails in the bathrooms, and lower beds, lever door handles and visual notifications in the sleeping quarters.

The entire resort is conveniently accessible, including parking, the elevator and a pool and hot tub lift.

Highlights: Why I Love The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Every night at the Torrey Pines Lodge is enough to create a list of reasons to come back!

Here are some of the highlights from my stay and why if you want a truly memorable experience, I think you too should consider the hotel for your next stay!

A Truly Stunning Lodge

This hotel is absolutely beautiful, from the perfectly manicured grounds outside to the gorgeous interior. I’d say the whole property is worth walking around just to admire it!

Outside, you’ll be greeted with a well-maintained yard complete with hedges, bushes with bright flowers in bloom, and an impressive fountain. This green space is one of the Lodge’s multiple wedding venues, alongside the Maurice Braun ballroom, which can be used for all sorts of special events.

Inside, I believe the lobby is just as spectacular! It’s so cozy with a fireplace, a warm wood-centric design, and little pops of color. Plus there is plenty of space for sitting and relaxing outside of your room.

An Amazing Pool

Plenty of San Diego hotels have outdoor pools, but few can boast pools quite as picturesque as the one at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. I think it’s among one of the most scenic in all of San Diego!

Not only is the pool large enough that you won’t be right on top of your fellow hotel guests, but there are plenty of chairs set up around the deck for lounging. It’s a great spot to cool off from the summer sun during the afternoon, and during the evening, the soft lights from the Lodge’s exterior add to the ambiance even further.

And don’t forget about Judson's, the recently opened poolside bar that serves up refreshments and handheld bites!

A World-Famous Golf Course

Not everyone comes to San Diego to play golf, but for those that do, the Torrey Pines Golf Course is a real treat!

The PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open is played annually on the course in January with the 2025 version set for January 22-25. On occasion, most recently in 2008 and 2021, the course also hosts a major, the US Open! With only four majors yearly - the Masters at Augusta, The PGA Championship, The Open Championship and The US Open – this is quite the honor!

The course is right next to the hotel, so you won’t have to travel far to play. It’s practically in the backyard of your hotel room, which has long made The Lodge at Torrey Pines a favorite among golf enthusiasts and casual golfers alike.

An Ideal San Diego Location

If you’re hoping to venture out from the resort often during your stay, you won’t be disappointed, as there’s lots to do nearby.

First off is, of course, the Torrey Pines State Reserve, also known as Torrey Pines State Park. It’s an excellent hiking spot with cliffs overlooking the ocean, and also connects to Torrey Pines State Beach.

The Lodge is also close to a number of La Jolla Beaches such as La Jolla Cove and other attractions like the La Jolla Playhouse and shopping in La Jolla Village. Del Mar’s beaches are well within reach as well and include spots for surfing, swimming, and even a pet-friendly beach at Del Mar Dog Beach.

What to Do Around the Neighborhood

As we mentioned earlier, The Lodge is a great jumping off point for exploring La Jolla, Del Mar, and even Downtown San Diego. There are lots of things to do around the hotel, so here are a few of our favorites.

Go to the Beach: La Jolla Shores

Guests of the Lodge are able to plan a day at this mile-long beach through the resort’s beach program. Escorted by a luxury car service, they will arrange for beach chairs, umbrellas and even lunch.

For extra adventure, consider a surf board rental or kayak rental, which is available through a Go City San Diego pass that includes access to over 55 attractions and experiences in the area.

Kayak at the Seven Caves

In my humble opinion, any day spent at a San Diego beach is a day well spent!

If you prefer to be more active rather than just working on your tan, we’ve got just the thing for you: sea kayaking! And you’re in luck, as La Jolla has one of the most unique kayaking experiences around.

The La Jolla: 2-Hour Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves is an experience you won’t get anywhere else. Not only will you be able to see the famous caves for yourself while paddling in the La Jolla Ecological Reserve off the coast, but you’ll even be able to kayak inside of Clam’s Cave.

Explore Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Nature lovers worldwide come to La Jolla to explore the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, home of the rare Torrey Pine tree.

With over eight miles of unique winding trails, and miles of beachfront, you’ll leave in awe of the natural beauty of Southern California.

Take Your Family to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps is located on a La Jolla bluff overlooking the ocean, and showcases over 60 fish and invertebrates habitats from all over the world. Multiple interactive exhibits offer guests the opportunity to learn about ocean life.

Plan in advance and pick-up a Go City San Diego pass to reserve your tickets, and bundle savings on other activities too.

I might suggest a visit to the world-famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park to see the giant pandas that recently arrived from China as another fun family activity as well.
