Beachfront Value at the Ocean Beach Hotel

Pretty Fountain in the Main Courtyard at the Ocean Beach HotelLooking at the Ocean Beach Hotel Towards the Beach

Located on the beach facing the sparkling blue waters of the picturesque Pacific Ocean, the Ocean Beach Hotel is a solid hotel choice if you’re looking for value and comfort directly on the beach.

This family-friendly hotel sits on the corner of Newport Avenue and Abbott Street in the world-famous San Diego funky beach town of Ocean Beach. The way I like to describe the area is palm trees, warm ocean breezes, colorful street art and kind ‘hellos’ from visitors and locals alike.

Local Tips
Great Beach in Front of Hotel
Ocean Beach is directly in front of the Ocean Beach Hotel and it is a great place to swim, surf or just sunbathe.

With views of the soon to be replaced Ocean Beach Pier, the hotel offers visitors a glimpse into the small town Southern California beach lifestyle from a bygone era.

And it’s this no-frills laid back feel with comfortable, spacious, and recently updated rooms, quality common spaces (with ocean views of course) plus a central location in San Diego that puts this hotel on my list.

Now we’re not talking about the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa up the way in Mission Beach or the 5-star The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla but for my traveling friends and family that are budget conscious that would still really love a friendly staff and quality stay on the beach for their family vacation, this could be the hotel!

Property Amenities

As a guest of the hotel, you’ll be greeted with convenient, free parking which is a huge cost savings right off the bat!

The lobby offers a gift shop and convenience store complete with cold beverages, snacks, wine and champagne. You’ll also find a small coffee area and a friendly member of the staff ready to assist you with check in and any special requests you may have.

The courtyard has a Mediterranean feel complete with tables and chairs for relaxing, a meal or perhaps a game with friends of family. The top floor of the hotel features a stunning open patio with seating available for guests to dine or relax with a perfect oceanfront view.

Simple yet sometimes overlooked amenities are included such as free wireless internet throughout the property. Laundry facilities are available for a small fee to wash and dry off towels and bathing suits after a sandy day in the ocean.

Speaking of the beach, guests who want to hit the beach can take advantage of the hotel's on-site beach umbrella and beach chair rental service as the sand is literally just steps away!

Beach & Recreational Amenities

Beyond the obvious beach activities like surfing, boogie boarding, swimming, sailing or just taking it easy with sunbathing or sand castle building with your kids, visitors can also rent bikes to explore the neighborhood. There are also tide pools just to the south of the hotel which are fun to explore.

Newport Avenue, the main street in Ocean Beach, is lined with eclectic shops, restaurants, and bars, providing guests with a unique and lively shopping and dining experience.

There is a small park, Ocean Beach Park, right in front of the hotel as well that’s quite nice for having a picnic in the warm temperature and clear blue San Diego skies. The property is in the middle of a laid back, bohemian beach neighborhood, where locals rule and visitors feel like they're right at home.

Dining Options

While there are no full service dining options directly at the hotel, guests are within walking distance of many popular restaurants and bars in Ocean Beach.

Hungry guests will have options such as barbecue, Mexican, seafood, Hawaiian, pizza and gourmet coffee nearby.

Pet-Friendly Services

Pets are welcome at no additional charge on the property and in the guest rooms. They even get a set of bowls upon arrival for food and water. In fact, the Ocean Beach Hotel is listed as one of our top picks for the Best Pet Friendly Hotels in San Diego.

Pet owners will also love the proximity to Dog Beach, a popular spot less than one mile away where dogs can run freely and enjoy the ocean waves.

Why the Ocean Beach Hotel is the Perfect Beachfront Getaway

Value doesn’t have to mean cheap or uncomfortable! When you visit the Ocean Beach Hotel, you’ll get to experience all the perks of a Southern California vacation without breaking the bank.

You already know that I love the chill vibes of the Ocean Beach neighborhood with the beach and surf just steps away. But what are the reasons I think you should consider this hotel for your next beach vacation?

Here are my top three reasons why I love this hotel!

Ocean Beach Views from the Ocean Beach Hotel
Ocean Beach Views from the Ocean Beach Hotel

A Prime Beachfront Location

The location of the Ocean Beach Hotel could not be better. It’s right across the street from the main beach in Ocean Beach and is within walking distance to several restaurants and bars.

Beautiful Ocean Views on a Budget

Many of the rooms offer a partial or full view of the ocean, with many of them also offering a private balcony or patio for you to sit down and take in the beautiful Southern California breeze.

And the best part is that they’re available at only a fraction of the cost of many oceanfront hotels in San Diego.

Comfortable Yet Affordable

Just because you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel doesn’t mean you have to concede on quality and location. Well, not when you stay at the Ocean Beach Hotel.

I love the simplicity and the affordability that allows for a longer beach vacation as well as more money to visit some of my favorite attractions in San Diego like the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park and SeaWorld San Diego in Mission Bay Park.

Berries and More at the OB Farmers Market
Berries and More at the OB Farmers Market

Adventure seekers, couples, families and even solo travelers will love all that Ocean Beach and the Ocean Beach Hotel has to offer its guests!

Whether you want to sunbathe on the beach, surf or bodyboard in the waves, or visit the local farmer’s market, the Ocean Beach Hotel is the perfect starting spot for so many of San Diego’s most popular things to do.

Here are a few things I suggest you try during your next visit to the Ocean Beach Hotel!

Right Outside the Property

With direct beach access from the hotel, there are countless beach activities you can enjoy with the hotel still in view. Here are some of our team’s favorite beach activities we think you should consider.

Go Beachcombing

Before the sun rises, take a stroll along the Pacific Ocean's waters to collect different items, such as shells and sea glass, for unique souvenirs.

Try Water Sports or Beach Activities

The beach in front of the hotel gives guests access to many popular water sports, such as beach kayaking, boogie boarding, surfing and more.

If you’d rather stick to the sand, the beach is perfect for sunbathing or for a more active afternoon, there’s a volleyball area on the north end of the beach. For families, kids of all ages can build sand castles and wade in the gentle waves of the shoreline.

Cast Your Reel at the Pier

Bring your rod and reel to the Ocean Beach Pier for some morning fishing or consider booking a deep-sea fishing tour.

Ocean Beach Municipal Pier is one of the few places in San Diego where you can fish without a valid California fishing license.

Ocean Beach Pier Closure

The Ocean Beach Pier, or as locals know it the ‘OB Pier’, has faced needed renovations for some time. In April 2024, plans were unveiled for a brand new pier to include a Surfers’ Lounge, Infinity Plaza, and new café & restaurant that will be known as ‘The Island’.

While no official timeline has been set, it’s looking like the work will begin in 2026, with the current pier remaining closed for safety and to limit any further damage until that time.

With this new information, unfortunately fishing off and strolling on the pier won’t be possible in the near term.

Nearby the Property

Conveniently located just a 15-minute drive from San Diego International Airport (SAN) and other popular San Diego attractions, the Ocean Beach Hotel is the perfect place to park your suitcases and explore everything San Diego has to offer.

Here are some of our team’s favorite nearby activities.

Explore the Ocean Beach Farmers Market

Visit the famous Ocean Beach Farmers Market on Wednesday evenings for live music, crafts, fresh fruit & vegetables and made-to-order food items.

Go Surfing

A few miles from Ocean Beach is one of the most popular beaches in San Diego for learning how to surf - Mission Beach. I will say that while it’s perfect for a surf lesson or beginners, it can get crowded and intermediates and experienced surfers might enjoy the many surf beaches in La Jolla like Blacks Beach or the iconic surf breaks at Windansea a good but more.

Honestly though, give the Ocean Beach surf right outside the hotel a try!

The beach is known for surfing with a variation of breaks – OB Pier, Main OB Break & Avalanche. Main OB Break has beach-break waves that go both right and left and are good for most surfing skill levels.

With lifeguards on duty for safety, I say leave the non-surfers on the shore for a picnic and go catch a couple waves!

Make a Stop at SeaWorld San Diego

Spend the day at one of the most popular theme parks in San Diego, SeaWorld San Diego. Located in nearby Mission Bay Park, you can see marine mammals, ride heart pumping and kid-friendly rides, plus learn more about conservation efforts that make the park truly special.

Before you go, be sure to purchase a Go City San Diego pass to take advantage of discounts to SeaWorld San Diego and other popular San Diego attractions. Save on your next visit to the San Diego Zoo, Belmont Park, museums, kayak and paddle board rentals and more.

Use our exclusive discount code GVSD5OFF to enjoy even greater savings.

Visit the San Diego Zoo

Speaking of family-friendly San Diego attractions, the hotel is within driving distance of the world-renowned San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park which is perfect for a family day trip.

Balboa Park is also home to more than a dozen educational museums plus trails, cafes and surely a healthy dose of San Diego’s sunshine!

Go for a Ride at Belmont Park

Take a short drive or grab a rideshare north to visit Belmont Park on Mission Beach. San Diego’s historic beachfront theme park features an iconic wooden roller coaster, games and more!

Take in the View at Sunset Cliffs

A visit to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, located just over 3 miles to the south of the hotel, offers hiking trails, breathtaking views and picturesque sunsets which are perfect for an evening outing.
