When I think of iconic San Diego hotels, the first one that comes to mind is the Hotel del Coronado Curio Collection by Hilton.
Also known as “the Del” to locals, the Hotel del Coronado is more than just a place to sleep at night; it’s also a hotel that has housed many celebrities, politicians, musicians, and even some Naval officers.
As a beachside resort benefitting from Southern California’s characteristic sun, the Del has been the filming location for multiple videos and movies throughout the years. The most famous was Some Like It Hot, filmed in 1958, which showcased the talents of Marilyn Monroe.
Of course, that’s not the only reason why I love it, and you don’t have to know a thing about the hotel’s history to enjoy its charms - though it certainly elevates the experience!
Hotel del Coronado on Coronado Central Beach
A Historic Hotel
The Hotel del Coronado has been welcoming guests since 1888 when a local rail line was used to bring vacationers right up to the front door.
One of the first large buildings in the country to be electrified, this seaside hotel on the Silver Strand quickly became a popular destination for wealthy east coast families.
The Del is actually featured in our Most Fun Things to do in San Diego.
Sunset of the Coronado Bridge Over San Diego Bay
The Del, Beautifully Situated
Although the railroad is long gone, you can easily reach Coronado Island by way of the spectacular Coronado Bridge that curves across scenic San Diego Bay. Driving time from San Diego International Airport (SAN) is 25 minutes, and from Downtown San Diego, 15 minutes, during normal traffic conditions.
For me when I get to stay at the Del, it’s about modern luxuries and exceptional service during my stay at this legendary hotel.
The Del’s Victorian elegance is joined to its 21st-century comforts through a timeless ambiance that surrounds you whether you are walking along the beach, strolling through the carefully manicured grounds or moving about the hotel’s beautifully designed public spaces.
From vacationing families to honeymooning couples to business travelers, The Hotel del Coronado offers the perfect combination of location and amenities topped with a magnificent history that enriches the experience for each guest.
We love the Del so much that we’ve featured it on our Best Things to do in San Diego and Best Places to Watch the Sunset in San Diego articles.

Delightful Dining at the Del
The hotel offers seven quite different dining experiences starting with the renowned Sunday Brunch in the fabulous Crown Room. The beachfront restaurant Sheerwater is the perfect location to enjoy the view over a delicious breakfast or dinner.
Even if you plan to spend your day at the beach, you’ll find that reserved seaside seating comes with bar-to-beach service. And as daylight fades and the stars come out, you can enjoy a bonfire on the beach, a Del tradition, with a menu of fireside delights including s’mores.
Beachside dining is particularly popular with couples, which is why this hotel is featured in the Best Romantic Things to Do in San Diego.
