Elegance combined with History
Located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the Gaslamp Plaza Suites is an elegant, European-style hotel situated close to everything visitors love about San Diego. Vacationers enjoy settling into the comfort of a beautifully appointed room or suite while corporate travelers appreciate the hotel’s restful environment and proximity to customers and clients. Original architectural elements reflect the hotel’s storied past.
Lofty Ambitions
Constructed in 1913, this building was once the city’s tallest, a handsome skyscraper that still provides wonderful views of San Diego Bay. Although taller buildings now dot the San Diego skyline, this 11-story hotel still maintains a commanding presence and beckons to visitors who appreciate a bit of history with their elegant surroundings.
The family-owned San Diego Trust & Savings Bank occupied the space until the headquarters was relocated to the corner of Broadway and Sixth Street in 1927. Going forward, the building housed a variety of professional businesses including the Jewelers’ Exchange for gemologists, jewelers, importers and exporters.
The change to a small luxury hotel is a fine example of re-adapted use. In addition to the original architectural features, visitors admire the marble, bronze and brass elements for which the building—listed in the National Registry of Historic Places—has long been known.
