A Guide to Staying at the Diamond Head Inn

If I was asked to describe Pacific Beach’s Diamond Head Inn in one sentence I would say that it’s a simple, clean, and well located hotel with a surprisingly modern design thanks to a recent renovation.

Located along the Pacific Beach boardwalk just across Ocean Boulevard from the Pacific Ocean, the Diamond Head Inn is the perfect getaway into San Diego’s sand and sun. This popular beachfront stay offers both suites and standard rooms with reasonable rates. It makes this hotel the perfect choice for travelers looking to connect with San Diego’s beautiful beaches, surf vibes, and a relaxed atmosphere.

The Diamond Head Inn offers travelers a boutique stay experience in a location perfect for exploring the Pacific Beach neighborhood. You’ll be able to walk along the boardwalk, eat in oceanfront restaurants, shop at local boutiques, and take a dip in our favorite swimming spots, all without the need for a car if you so choose.

I’m a longtime resident not just of San Diego, but of Pacific Beach, so I know the hotel and the area quite well. With that, let’s dive a bit deeper into the property amenities, incredible location and more so you have the details you’ll need about this affordable little hotel on the beach!

The Ultimate Pacific Beach Experience

Staying at the Diamond Head Inn puts you in a prime location for living the beach lifestyle in San Diego. You can easily enjoy my family’s favorite outdoor activities, like snorkeling, surfing, swimming, and kayaking, and all within walking distance from the property!

Locals flock to the shores of Pacific Beach and walk or bike the Ocean Boulevard Promenade boardwalk trail that faces the hotel. Locals just simply refer to it as the ‘PB Trail’.

Beloved for its laid-back vibe and pure Southern California beach lifestyle, I can confidently say that the Pacific Beach neighborhood is where people come to enjoy San Diego’s sun, sand, and fun!

Property Amenities

The Diamond Head Inn features a variety of amenities designed to make your stay relaxing and stress free.

Let’s start with the multilingual front desk staff available 24-hour a day and coffee available upon arrival. If you need to store valuables, safe-deposit boxes are conveniently located at the front desk.

Heated Outdoor Swimming Pool Access

While The Diamond Head Inn doesn’t have a pool on the property itself, guests have access to a heated outdoor pool at a nearby sister property. The property is about three blocks away, and available during your stay.

Complimentary Parking

Free parking is available at the hotel for all guests. Considering the prime beachfront location, this alone is a fantastic perk!

I do know that the property’s parking is limited so on the off chance that no onsite spots are available, you can also park free of charge at the sister property just three blocks away.

Laundry Facilities Available

Coin-operated laundry facilities can be found on the property which is perfect in case of any emergencies or just to make sure you always have clean clothes.

Dining, Restaurants, and Free Breakfast!

With a stay at the Inn, you’ll be within walking distance to some of the area’s best restaurants, cafes, pubs, and so much more.

If you want to save a little money on food costs, you’ll be happy to know that Diamond Head suites come with a full kitchen, while standard rooms come with a mini fridge and microwave.

Complimentary breakfast, with coffee, a variety of teas, and fresh fruit is also included daily at no additional charge as part of your stay.

Free Wi-Fi

While I think Wi-Fi is a bit of a given in 2025, it’s still good to know that Wi-Fi is included in all rooms and throughout the property.

A Pet Friendly Property

Both dogs and cats are welcome to stay at the Diamond Head! The hotel allows up to two pets (maximum 40 pounds each) for an additional fee of $45 plus tax per stay. And heads up, pets have to stay in their crates when they are left unattended.

If you’re planning on bringing your pet, I’d suggest double checking the rules and prices with the staff before you arrive just to make sure you have the absolute latest details.

ADA Compliant

Diamond Head’s accessible rooms ensure comfort for guests alongside their companions.

From height-appropriate furniture, lever-style handles, and visual alerts in the rooms to accessible parking, wheelchair accessible rooms, and ground floor accommodations, these ADA compliant features allow for a safe and comfortable stay.

Why I Love The Diamond Head Inn

There are quite a few reasons that I would recommend the Diamond Head Inn to friends and family. I personally love a boutique hotel experience and with just 21 rooms and suites, that’s exactly what is offered at this hotel.

I’d also say right up front that when budget matters, this hotel is a spectacular choice. For my budget conscious friends, the value you get between the cleanliness of the rooms, free parking, complimentary breakfast and prime location is really hard to beat!

Let’s dive a bit deeper into why I think you should consider the Diamond Head Inn for your next stay in San Diego.

You Can’t Beat This Location

If you’re looking for a beachside location in a neighborhood that’s centrally located offering a multitude of options for things to do, then the Diamond Head Inn could not be better!

Conveniently situated between Mission Beach and La Jolla, you’ll find the property along the boardwalk at 605 Diamond St., San Diego, CA 92109.

The hotel overlooks North Pacific Beach, giving guests easy access to restaurants, shops, and, of course, our famous Southern California laid-back vibes and hospitality. Guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean from their rooms or from just across the street in the warm sands overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

As a bonus tip, if you’re looking for a romantic getaway or staycation, I’d recommend you plan to be on the beach at sunset. Catching a sunset at Pacific Beach makes our list of the Best 14 Places to Watch the Sunset in San Diego.

Affordable Ocean Views

As I previously mentioned, if you don’t want to over spend on your stay, the Diamond Head Inn is a budget-friendly option. They even have seasonal specials so be sure to check the availability and prices for the room or suite of your choice below to see if you can strike a deal.

I’ll be incredibly honest with you as I always want to offer readers the details you won’t find elsewhere and say that depending on the time of year and type of room or suite you prefer, you can often get rooms starting as low as the $100 a night range.

I can tell you for a hotel of this quality, on the beach, in a central San Diego location the prices are an absolute steal!

Casual, Comfortable, and Convenient

I love the simplicity, easy vibes, and affordable cost of the Diamond Head Inn.

Imagine waking to the gentle rumble of rolling waves of the Pacific Ocean. Then standing in your room, sipping on your morning coffee, as you look out toward the ocean all at a fraction of the cost of one of the other oceanfront hotels in the area.

Guests will be welcomed to newly renovated suites with comfortable beds, convenient kitchen facilities, and a relaxing ambiance. Whether traveling with your family, as a couple or as a solo traveler, the classic decor, friendly staff, and topnotch location put this hotel top on my list for travelers looking for a hassle-free, ocean side vacation.

Whether at one of the Pacific Beach beaches or in the surrounding neighborhoods, you’ll have plenty of options to entertain you and your family.

Onsite Activities

The Diamond Head Inn isn’t a resort offering on property activities, a gym, fitness classes and the like. However, with the beach across the street, there are plenty of activities that are just a short walk away.

World Famous Beaches

While staying at the Diamond Head, you’ll be perfectly placed to visit popular beaches like the aforementioned North Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and the beaches in La Jolla.

If you’re here to surf, chances are, that image you have of California surfing surrounded by a laid-back atmosphere is, in fact, PB! Pacific Beach offers some of the best, and most iconic, places to surf in San Diego and I’ll tell you more about that below.

Pacific Beach is also home to some great kayaking, paddle boarding, kiteboarding, and swimming. Of course, if you prefer staying dry, you’ll find plenty of places perfect for strolling or sunbathing as well.

Surfing Pacific Beach and Beyond

San Diego has a deep history of surf culture and Pacific Beach is a huge part of the scene.

If you want to go surfing, head to Crystal Pier or PB Point if you’re an experienced surfer. If you’re a beginner or just looking to practice, I’d recommend the surfing only beach at Tourmaline Surf Park. There you’ll find that the gentle waves are perfect for honing your skills.

Read our article Pacific Beach vs Ocean Beach Neighborhoods to learn more about PB and why it’s synonymous with San Diego’s surf culture.

Private Surf Lessons

If you’ve never surfed before, as a surfer myself I can tell you that catching your first wave is exhilarating! If you’d like to give it a shot, I recommend the 90 minute Private Surf Lesson which will have you in the water and on your board before you know it.

If you're completely inexperienced, a beginner, or intermediate just trying to get better, you’ll get direct tailored one-on-one instruction to accommodate your goals. Plus you’ll learn surf etiquette, water safety, and the proper techniques needed to get you on, and staying on, your board.

A wetsuit, rashguard, and surfboard are all included with the lesson.

SeaWorld San Diego is less than 5 miles away and usually takes less than 15 minutes by car or rideshare like Uber or Lyft. The world-famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park is about 11 miles away and is about 30 minutes from the Diamond Head Inn.

Save with a Go City San Diego Pass

If you’re looking to visit more than one attraction in the city, I always recommend my friends and family look into the Go City San Diego pass. It provides access to San Diego’s top attractions, tours, and gear rentals for one low price.

Once you’re done, take a stroll or enjoy a bike ride along the boardwalk. There are plenty of places to eat, shop, and just relax as you make your way down the boardwalk trail in front of the hotel.

Fun fact! If you bought your dog with you, Kate Sessions Memorial Park is dog friendly!

Dining Options

If you’re craving fresh caught seafood, PB is the place to be. You’re only steps away from Oscar’s Mexican Seafood, Taco Surf, and Cannonball.

Not into seafood? No problem! Grab a plate of the best wings in town at Dirty Birds, enjoy classic Southern California cuisine at Kono’s Café, or sip on a cocktail at World Famous.

Even better, enjoy a meal at one of my favorite spots, the JRDN Restaurant, and enjoy a margarita with a side of Pacific Beach view. Cheers!

San Diego hosts a vibrant and diverse craft beer scene. You can explore some of our world-class breweries, sip on award-winning beers, and immerse yourself in the local beer culture.

From barrel-aged beers to rich stouts and hoppy IPAs, you’ll find San Diego’s breweries have the tours and tastings perfect for you.
