Top Reasons to Visit Swami's Beach
Swami’s Beach is perhaps best known for attracting surfers. However, whether you want to head out on the waves or stay on the sand, there is a lot to love about this beach.
World Class Surf
The surf at this beach is consistent and fun. Swami’s offer relatively challenging waves, so beginners should consider opting for another spot. However, if you have some experience with surfing, this is a can’t-miss spot.
Perhaps the most notable feature of the area’s surf is the point break. There are also some beach breakers. The main peak is a couple of hundred yards from shore, requiring significant paddling.
Expect average to long waves depending on the day. Additionally, expect to see large crowds, especially on weekend days.
Even if you don’t surf, the popularity of the spot attracts some very talented surfers who are fun to watch. This includes several professionals who frequent the area.
A place to Meditate
Not only is Swami's known for it world class surf, its namesake is from the Self-Realization Fellowhip which has a large meditation garden at the park on top of the cliff.
Shade and Grass
Swami’s Beach features some pleasant, shaded areas that are ideal for enjoying a picnic or just getting out of the sun. This is a significant feature for a beach in the San Diego area. Many others are almost entirely devoid of natural sun protection.
The grassy areas include picnic tables and barbecues. This makes enjoying a full day at the beach easy. There are also nearby restaurants and cafes along the edge of the beach.
Tide Pools
When the tide is low, tide pools appear in the rocky areas to the north of the beach. This is a great place to see some of the smaller marine flora and fauna. Expect to find sea hairs, brittle stars and octopuses.
You may even find old fossils and shells hidden among the older rock areas. This can be a fun and interesting way to spend some time down by the beach. It is a great family activity.
Self-Realization Center
As mentioned above, the beach gets its name from Swami Paramahansa Yogananda who founded the Self-Realization Fellowship. This organization runs the meditation gardens on the edge of the beach.
For anyone who enjoys meditation or simply relaxing near the ocean, this can be an interesting place to visit. The garden is also very beautiful if you want to take a look as you pass by.
